Narrator: Ray was walking home after he and Chris went to the pub. They both felt alive and overwhelmed by the sense of regret. Ray felt as though he should go to Chris and tell him his point of view…

Ray: So, are we going to do this or what?

Chris: What… what do you mean?

Ray: I mean. You want to go see her right?

Chris: Yeah-

Ray: -So what’s stopping us?

Chris: Work? My house? Your house? We cant just leave.

Ray: That’s where your wrong, we ‘shouldn’t’ leave… but we can.

Chris: When you say we-

Ray: I’m coming with you

Chris: im not sure that’s-

Ray: -Someone’s got to be there when you fall down from exhaustion. (Laughs)

Chris: If your up for it I guess

Ray: Well it wont be that hard will it, we’ll just get the car and-

Chris: -no,no,no,no that’s where your wrong.

Ray: Were not taking a car?

Chris: No.

Ray: What about a train

Chris: Nope.

Ray: Bus?

Chris: No

Ray: How about a pac-

Chris: We’re walking (walks past him)

(Rays shoulders feel heavy)

Ray: Oh, but why?

Chris: Because its not about the end product its about the journey

Ray: okay, fine.

Chris: I leave in a few hours

Ray: No we leave in a few hours

(Chris turns around to see Ray)

Chris: Your coming?

Ray: Of course I am. Some ones got to be there with a defibulator haha…

(Chris looks angrily at Ray)

(Still looking at the audience) Narrator: You’ve always got to ruin it haven’t you-

Chris: Just make sure you’re ready

Ray: I already am

Chris: But… what you wearing?

Ray: (Gestures from his shoulders to his feet) this.

Chris: Only that?

Ray: Well yeah, I went across America with only three pairs of clothes.

Chris: You sure that’s a good idea?

Ray: Yes, just…trust me okay

Chris: Yeah, okay.

Narrator: Chris left Ray with all his thoughts for a minute.

(Narrator and Chris leave the stage)

Ray: He strong you know. You could through anything at him and he would catch it like it was nothing. I was like him once but then I changed… I don’t know why… maybe it was his impression on me. We’ll get there I know we will. But it will be hard for him when he sees her… and then when-or if he leaves. I want to hear him say; ‘the only thing i feel that matters. Is that i saw her. I saw her once more before there was no time. And that was the only, and i mean the only thing that mattered to me.’ Because, I don’t want the cancer to overwhelm him, I want the cancer, the thing stopping him to be indifferent to her and his interpretation. It was just an idiosyncrasy. A famous man once said "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time". Now it is time to live and jump into the abyss. (exits)
