Marie-Anne's POV
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Tyler asks as I enter his office. His face is flush like he has been working for hours, his sleeves are rolled up, and his shirt is unbuttoned half way.
"You look tired," I say taking a seat across from him.
"Yeah, I've been working all day," he says rubbing his red eyes. He gets up from his seat and comes in front of me leaning on his desk. "How was your day?"
"You know same old, same old," I tell him looking at some papers on his desk. "What's all this?" I ask while I read the papers.
"This new case that just came," he says in a sad tone.
"You working homicides now?" I ask.
"No, it's not mine, I was just reviewing it. They arrested a man today for it and I just think he's innocent, but I can't do anything about it."
"Tell me about it," I order.
"So, the man they arrested is the woman's husband," he says.
"That's tricky, why would he want to kill his wife, is he getting insurance money or something?" I ask. If you've been in this job long enough, you learn that a lot of people kill their spouses for money. It's really sad that people think money is worth more than a person's life.
"No, but he did give his wife divorce papers to sign, she wouldn't sign them," I guess he thought death was going to finally get rid of that wife he did not want no more, that's why my ass ain't getting married. I don't have time to deal with stupid people. "They're an interracial couple," he adds after a few seconds. "A black man marries a white woman and the woman ends up dead, they just blame it on the black man."
"You seem so sure that he didn't do it, doesn't this feel like the O.J Simpson case? You are using racism just like his lawyers did and we all know that he did kill his wife."
"That's the thing, it is base on racism. The man has an alibi," he says pulling out a file from his desk.
"What's the alibi?" I ask.
"He was at his girlfriend's house the whole night," he says doing a circle with his hands. "I went to talk to the girlfriend this morning, she swore on her life that he was with her. She said that she is so sure because they were going at it until like four in the morning." He says with a disgusted face. Who the heck has sex until four in the morning? This man probably taking some pills.
"She might be lying," I tell him. "Girlfriends lie for their boyfriends all the time."
"I also went to talk to the man and you know I have good judgment; this man wouldn't hurt a fly to save his life. The only thing he's guilty of is being a jerk and cheating on his wife," he says. I study his face and all I could see is worry, he really did care about this case. That's what I like about Tyler, he cares about things that he shouldn't be. I can't believe he took time off his busy day to work a case that isn't even his.
"Does he have a lawyer?" I ask starting to believe him a little.
"Nope, he is stuck with a public defender," he says sighing.
"I'll take care of it," I tell him, "don't worry about it."
"How?"
"I'll become his lawyer," I tell him.
"You can't, he doesn't have money to hire you," he says.
"Don't worry, I got it," I tell him getting up from my seat. "When's his arraignment?"
