Dylan's POV
"Hi, I'm here to see Jean," I tell the receptionist of Marie-Anne's office. She looks up giving me a bright smile, not trying to be rude I smile back.
"You know the way," she simply says. I nod my head mouthing a thank you. Marie-Anne probably will kill me when she sees me, but I have to apologize, I owe that much to her. I don't know what I was thinking trying to embarrass her, maybe I'm mad at her because of what happened eight years ago. I knock on her door waiting for her to answer.
"Come in," her soft voice says, I open the door, she is standing at her window looking down at the street. She doesn't turn around to see who it is and just lean closer to the window. "Dylan," she says after some time still not turning around. "Did you want something?" She asks.
"How do you know it was me?" I ask taking a seat on her desk while pushing the papers off.
"Your smell, you still wear the same cologne from eight years ago," I nod my head agreeing even though I know she couldn't see me. "Did you want something?" She asks again.
"I just wanted to apologize for my actions the other day," I tell her. She shakes her head slightly. I walk up to her and look at her, turning around she gives me a small smile but goes back to staring at her window.
"Are you okay?" I ask her.
"Yeah," she replies.
"Why are you staring at the window?"
"I been reading all day to build a case, I just needed a little break. I like looking outside, the people look so small down there, sometimes I wonder if that's what God sees when He's looking down at us." I go to the window and also look down. She's right, the people look like small ants from up here. "From up here I can see the mistakes they are about to make, I see when they are about to bump into someone or something," she adds.
"Yeah," I say. She seems in a good mood today, she's all morals and deep. It reminds me of her old self, she was always smart and always had logics to get you through some things.
"I have to get back to work, you need to leave," she says pulling away from the window and going back to her seat. Taking a seat, she pulls a book and starts reading. "Dylan, Dylan," she says. I look up to her and realize that I was just staring at her. "I have work to do," she says again.
"What if I help you?" I ask her taking a seat across from her.
"You can't," she says.
"Yes, I can. Reading is fun, I've always dreamed about reading old laws to build cases," I say sarcastically while opening a book. She chuckles while biting her bottom lip. She still does that? It's something I always liked about her, it makes her look so sexy.
"No, but thank you," she says kindly declining my offer. "And thank you for apologizing, but you know it doesn't change anything between us right?" And Marie-Anne is back to her mean self, what is the point of someone apologizing if they don't get forgiven?
"Yeah, right?" I say with a fake smile. "What do I have to do to earn your forgiveness?" I ask.
"Nothing, I forgive you, but I just don't want you to think that means we can be friends." She crosses her hands over her chest and stares at me waiting for me to leave. "Dylan, I'm not the same person anymore. I've changed, I've moved on, and I just don't want to take a walk back to my past. You are someone from my past, I just think you should stay there," she says with an unreadable expression on her face. At this point, I don't know if she means them or if she is just playing to cover how she really feels. She always did like to push people away from her.
