                                                                 Chapter 5

‘’It’s just a matter of time before it starts to rain, we need to find a shelter.’’, one of many women complained loudly. The others joined, talking between themselves. Rosalie kept May, who wasn’t as small as she thought, close to her, keeping her warm with her body. Indeed, it was freezing outside but waiting in the middle of nowhere didn’t seem like the brightest idea.

What surprised Rosalie the most was that no one tried to disobey orders and strictly followed the guards and knights. As soon as they thought it was far away from the Kingdom, they turned and left without any word. It was getting darker since the forest was very dense. Rosalie hoped Andrew made it and will soon be with them, but it would be impossible if she stays in the group.

Seeing only one solution to handle the situation, she gently took May’s hand and walked away from the others. Most of them were busy talking or rubbing their arms together to keep warm, so no one noticed them.

                ‘’Where are we going?’’

‘’Don’t worry, we won’t go far. We need to find a shelter so that even if it starts to rain, we’ll be safe and sound.’’

Rosalie walked more quickly, anxious. May wasn’t a part of the plan, but she had to tell her Andrew was coming. Predicting her reaction wasn’t necessary, she already knew what was going to happen so she tightened her hold.

‘’Look, you need to keep quiet. My brother is coming with us, so we’ll stay here to meet him, alright?’’

May’s eyes widened with both fear and surprise. She took a small step back.

                ‘’Is your brother like Lex?’’

‘’What? No, no he isn’t. You’ll like him, I promise.’’

‘’Why didn’t he stay with others?’’ There it was, the element of ‘surprise’ Rosalie predicted. She thought of a way to tell her calmly that he didn’t want to, but she’d get mad Alexander didn’t come too. They stopped, their path blocked by a lake. It was too deep to walk through, yet if they swam, they would get cold. Rosalie looked up, releasing a sigh of relief when she saw a huge tree nearby. The leaves and branches were dense and it would probably be the safest place to be. Also, it wasn’t far so Andrew could find them.

‘’It’s a good thing he’s coming, we maybe wouldn’t make it on our own, May. Come now, we need to hide under that tree.’’ She pointed at it with her finger and May nodded, walking alongside.

The silence was making them both nervous, it was a sign something was coming. Was it a storm or just rain, they couldn’t know. Rosalie dumped her sac on the ground and used a thin sheet to cover the ground. May then snuggled closer to her, wrapping the corners of sheet around them.

                ‘’Why didn’t you marry Alexander?’’

Rosalie opened her mouth to respond, but nothing came out. Of course, she hadn’t expected such a question, but still, she had no answer.

                ‘’I don’t love him.’’

For the first time, she heard May laugh. She looked her in the eyes.
