Chapter 24

            One month later

The Great Hall was once more a joyful place. Waverly and Darius stepped into marriage, smiles not disappearing from their faces for a second. May and Lukas were officially Prince and Princess, heirs to the Vallor’s throne. Caleb was buried outside the castle the day after he died. Numerous people attended his burial, but none were too sorry. One of the healers that stopped by to congratulate on the wedding said he had been ill for most of his life, his mind overwhelmed. It explained all the changes in his behavior, but Rosalie still felt responsible for his death.

No trial was held against her. Alexander called a meeting and the knights along with witnesses agreed it was self-defense. Her warning proved she didn’t mean any harm, but in order to survive, had to play harsh. She returned the next day to the throne, a bit shaken, but otherwise unharmed. Waverly and May spent time with her in the gardens, trying to set her mind on something else. It worked, but she had to feign she was actually interested in gardening only to satisfy them. She was glad she had such loyal and caring friends. Rosalie didn't think she deserved them.

Life went back to normal. Castle was divided into many parts, offering all kinds of jobs to people willing to work. Villagers brought food and water in exchange for coins, while those around the castle worked with cattle, horses and taught fighting skills. Rosalie made sure all maids, servants and others who worked in the castle almost the whole day got a fair amount of coins and several days off duty to be with families and friends. Alexander scolded her for being too indulgent, but she silenced him with a glare. He made no comments about what she promised the day Caleb died, obeying her demands.

Vilburn was part of the Vallor Kingdom now. The villagers agreed to accept help and alliance was born. Knights regularly strolled around the borders and looked for places to found new villages. People were happier and gladly helped each other which helped to build strong connection between, their social rank and wealth didn't matter at all. Whenever they had an argument concerning such matter, Alexander sent out knights to act as mediators and satisfy both sides by deciding what's fair.

‘’Your Majesty, your brother sent you a message.’’ A guard loomed over her, standing a bit too close for her liking. Still, she smiled politely at him and took the note with an approving nod. He scurried away, joining the guards behind the throne. She unfolded the small piece of paper, turning away from Alexander’s curious eyes. He was too curious, asking many questions and doubting her judgment.

Dearest sister, I hope you haven’t forgotten about me. I wanted to come to the castle, but Arthur was ill with fever and I struggled to find a good healer. Do not worry, he is fine now, quite a restless child. But, that is not why I wrote this. During our days spent together, Catherine and I discovered we were bound, connected to each other like we never imagined. Two days ago, she announced that she is bearing a child, my own child. I cannot explain how happy I am to become a father, hopefully the one my child deserves. I wish you immense happiness with Alexander and wish for you to visit us soon. Pass my congratulations to the newlywed couple and please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your loved one. I know it is not your fault, just the thought of him raising his hand on you makes me shiver. You’ve done what you had to do, remember that, Rose. Love you forever, Andrew.

She smiled sadly at the note, folding it back. Alexander trailed his fingertips down her cheeks, his gaze soft and full of concern. She forced herself to meet his eyes and faked a genuine smile.
