Admittedly, I didn't like Fatespeaker that much in The Dark Secret (though I liked her a lot more in the books following that. Character development 10/10), but I honestly ship this.
Why?
Okay, let's look to Starflight's perspective.
All his life, he's been ridiculed for being cowardly, by everyone — even including the friends/siblings he's grown up with. All his friends think he's a coward, he's not brave, he would rather risk someone else's scales than his own, he's an annoying know-it-all, etc.
I mean, yeah, Sunny wasn't like that. I can respect and recognize that — she tried to consider the bright side of each and every one of her friends, and encourage them to do their best.
But, while Sunny was super supportive, she never highlighted Starlight's best moments unless someone else was mean to him. So she'd defend him, but she wouldn't really... compliment him, or tell him that he's brave or cool or smart, etc., until someone else would say something. Which is cool and all, but Sunny is the kind of dragon to defend a lizard if someone was insulting it.
Starflight went through his whole life, with maybe less abuse from the guardians (this part is canon; they were nicer to him, even if only slightly because they were afraid his abilities would suddenly emerge later) but a lot more ridicule and hurt from his friends.
Now, abusive, hurtful guardians are the dragons you'd expect abuse from, but imagine how hurt and exposed Starflight must have felt all those years when none of his friends ever openly recognized his good moments.
Starflight has gone through his whole life with less abuse from the guardians, but more emotional abuse from his own friends, who he never realized he couldn't trust.
At this point, Starflight's esteem must be LOW. I mean, even his own friends thought he'd betrayed them (and their only argument for why he DIDN'T was because they didn't think he was even remotely brave enough to betray anyone).
Starflight's esteem is low, and he's hurt, and in The Dark Secret, he was kidnapped with no contact from his friends and on a volcanic, ashy, horrible-smelling island.
And... hello stranger.
Hello stranger who doesn't seem adverse to the "vision" that said Starflight would become king with her.
Hello stranger who recognizes Starflight's smart without ridiculing him, and pointing it out for him right when it happens instead of waiting for someone to try to hurt him.
Hello stranger who thinks Starflight's crazy-brave.
Hello stranger who thinks he's a good dragon.
Hello stranger who gives him courage and thinks that he's cool, that he's brave, that he's nice and wonderful.
Well, no wonder Starflight's so awkward around Fatespeaker! Fatespeaker must be the first dragon who has ever seemed to genuinely think that he's wonderful, he's brave, and he's kind. Fatespeaker is the first dragon who points out Starflight's best decisions right when he does them, instead of waiting for another dragon to bring up his bad moments and traits.
So, while Fatespeaker and Sunny are awfully similar, there is one thing that makes Fatespeaker different: her ability to give Starflight courage, to make him think there's more to himself than what others have been trying to convince him his whole life.
If it weren't for Fatespeaker, Starflight wouldn't have escaped. He wouldn't have warned Glory. Fatespeaker gave him encouragement, gave him bravery, in return for absolutely nothing. She doesn't even seem slightly bothered by the fact that he's a little awkward, and she doesn't point out his faults and mistakes that everyone else seems to do.
Fatespeaker is the first dragon to show Starflight that she loves him and cares for him, even if Starflight doesn't know what to do with it. Starflight doesn't know what to do because nobody's done that before, yet Fatespeaker doesn't care; she still compliments him, she still helps him out and I bet she reads to him a lot after he went blind. She shows Starflight how great he is, how wonderful he is when no one else did and she doesn't mind his awkwardness.
Yeah, if Starflight's going to love Fatespeaker romantically, it might take a while. But I think Fatespeaker's OK with waiting. She's OK with letting Starflight figure himself out, and while he's doing that, she's going to continue reminding him how amazing and brave he is when no one else will.
Even if they don't end up together... you have to admit. It's sweet.
(P.S. - For those of you who don't know,
1. Even if Starspeaker doesn't happen, Sunnyflight has been confirmed to not be happening.
2. Unless a more likely female candidate shows up to win Starflight's heart, that dragonet we see in Moon's vision who called Starflight "father" is likely to be Fatespeaker's and Starflight's child)
10/10
QuoteS:
"Starflight, you were so brave."
"I like how you turned out."
"No! It doesn't have to be you! It especially doesn't have to be you! You've done enough."
