I kind of ship this.
I know Qibli doesn't appear to show any form of affection for Umber, but still. I feel like it would be a cute couple.
They both appear to observe a lot, and they seem pretty smart. I think it would be a good match.
So much potential there, too - such a good match, and it's well, LGBT, which is something you almost never see in a book that's audience is mainly directed at pre-teens and young teens.
What I imagine happening here is that Tui decided to throw in a gay character, who had a crush on one of the male characters, almost like a little foreshadowing of *Spoiler for tenth book* Tamarin x Anemone *Spoiler over*. But still - it's almost as if Tui threw him away afterwards, thinking that he's served his purpose as being a gay character only to foreshadow what was to come, if that makes sense.
Or, maybe, she didn't completely throw him away after all - Ooh, what if he comes back and falls in love with Winter instead of Qibli? It'd be interesting. Or maybe he'd fall in love with another male character. I don't know, but it sounds cute, doesn't it?
