So, I actually really like this ship. It was sweet and took its time, like any realistic romance in a book should be, and it introduces an interesting concept — instead of a low-life woman marrying a high-ranking prince, it's sorta the other way around.

It's a hotheaded, warrior-like, badass militaristic princess who meets a low-life with an unimportant job and takes her to the commander, then to the queen, upon where she finds out that he's the son of a criminal and fugitive — one she's familiar with, and one she's not fond of. Despite this, though, she continues to find him attractive and isn't as angry towards him keeping secrets as she would be to anyone else.

It's a wonderful and unique concept that hasn't been introduced to many book series — mainly, the reversed roles, because in most romantic fantasy books (or at least Disney-like fantasy books) it's a repetition of the same story: lady (sometimes princess, but not usually) falls in love with a prince.

It's interesting because the Ripnami situation has a role-reversal situation, where Riptide is an obeying low-life and Tsunami is the badass princess who is more likely to rescue a damsel in distress, and this time, the damsel is Riptide (lol, sorry 'Tide).

But anyway, enough with the dynamics and concepts of it. How is it working out so far in the series?

Well... that's the thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for realistically slow romantic stories, especially since it's a princess and a lowlife, but there's a difference between slow-working romance and romance that's not actually moving forward.

I mean, it was cute. It still is. But Tsunami and Riptide are super far away from each other and haven't spoken for a year, and there have been no indications that she wrote letters to Riptide (I could be wrong, but I don't remember them) so the relationship seems to be... well, diminishing is the best word I could find to describe it.

They need to spend more time together in order for the relationship to progress, or at LEAST send letters. Just send letters and visit more often. Long-distance relationships can work, but there has to be some effort you two.
