His hair was dark and long, unkempt underneath a burgundy-colored beanie. Eyes as dark as night and a smile that could make any girl's heart melt. And I guess I was no exception to that. At first glance, I knew I liked him. They were the new kids at Auradon - those VKs - and King Beast and Queen Belle told all of us citizens to be cordial but that was it. They didn't want any of us befriending them or forming attachments to them in any way.

My parents were indifferent to that view, though. Maybe being the daughter of Mowgli and Shanti was a good thing rather than a bad one. They helped me to see things much differently than the other inhabitants of Auradon. Because of that, I never judged anyone for anything - race, gender, religion, and other things. And I never once judged Jay for it, either. After all, it's not like he could help being the son of a villain.

And...and deep down, I don't think he was all bad. As I walked across the school campus, I could hear cheering coming from the tourney field. When I reached the chain-link fence, I stopped and reached my hands up to it. I wrapped my fingers around the silver rings and gazed out at the group of boys running across the field. Even before he took off his helmet, I knew who the leader was. Dark hair spilled out as he tugged it free of his head and a smile lit up his face.

Jay. Butterflies swarmed in my stomach and I smiled, leaning my forehead to the cool metal links as I watched him pat Carlos on the back. Looks like he was fitting in fairly well here. Suddenly, Ben's eyes found mine and he smiled, waving me over. I shook my head furiously, anxiety bubbling up inside me. He was crazy!

I wasn't going over there. I got nervous as it was just being in the same hallway as Jay, much less on the field within 3 feet of him. Carlos and Jay turned then to see who he was gesturing to and I saw Carlos smile.

"Come over here!" Ben called to me and I sighed in defeat.

I slipped past the fence and trudged across the grass to my childhood best friend. Strands of light brown hair hung limp with sweat on his forehead and he smiled as I walked up to them. He went in for a hug but I pushed him back with a laugh.

"After you shower, Benny," I admonished playfully and he mock-groaned.

"Guys, this is my best friend, Aayat, daughter of Mowgli and Shanti," he introduced me to Jay and Carlos.

I nodded to them, "Nice to meet you,"

Carlos held out a hand and I shook it, smiling.

"Is it true your dad used to live in a jungle?" he asked me excitedly and I laughed.

"Yeah. In fact, for years he couldn't even speak Hindi. My mom's parents taught him that when they took him in. He doesn't really remember how to speak to the animals anymore, though," I told him.

He arched an eyebrow in surprise, "So he's changed a lot then,"

I laughed again, shaking my head, "No, not completely. He still wants to wear his loin-cloth but my mom put her foot down on that one,"

Carlos laughed with me and I felt Jay's eyes boring into me. Glancing up, I met his dark gaze. There was something hidden there and for a second, I thought it might even be jealousy.

"I'm Jay," he said, capturing my hand in his, "Son of Jafar,"

Before I knew it, his lips were on the back of my hand in a sweet, chaste kiss. I blushed scarlet, feeling warm all over. With gentle fingers, he let my hand go and it fell back to my side but the blush stayed on my cheeks. I bit my lip, meeting his eyes once more.

"So...can your dad really turn into a snake?" I asked him.

Immediately, I felt the need to face-palm myself. Really? That's the best I could come up with?! He didn't seem to notice my awkwardness though and just smiled.

"He used to could. But now, with the no-magic thing on the Isle, he can't," he shrugged and I instantly felt bad for asking.

He saw my face fall and he smiled, not unkindly.

"It's fine, though. All he ever did as a snake was eat rats, anyway," he smirked and I laughed.

I turned to say something to Ben then when I noticed that him and Carlos were both nowhere to be found. Apparently, sometime in our conversation, they both had slipped away. I turned back to Jay sheepishly.

"I think they bailed on us," I said, shifting from foot-to-foot.

He shrugged, grinning, "Doesn't matter. I had more fun talking to you, anyway."

I grinned back, feeling my shyness melt away as I got to know this beautiful boy.
