A summer's breeze blew the emerald green leaves of the palm trees, the sky a bright blue overhead as my sandals slapped against the pavement.
"And that's the lounge - it's where everyone hangs out. Not to mention they serve Blix in there," my older sister, Lola, pointed around the campus, a cheerful smile plastered to her face.
"Blix?" I asked quizzically, pushing back a strand of tumbling black-brown tresses from my face.
"Only the best soda ever! Far as I know, PCA is the only school around that has it." she informed me, "Gosh, you are going to love it here, I just know it."
I smiled as Lola continued to ramble on about things to do around campus. I knew she was excited I'd decided to enroll this year. Truth be told, I'd been reluctant to leave my friends but the idea of getting to spend time with Lola, who I only spent summers with anyway since the 'rents split, was more than enough reason to change my mind about coming here.
Besides, I admit, I was eager to meet my sister's friends I'd heard so much about.
Little did I know that would happen sooner than later as two figures zoomed by us. One was taller with dark brown skin and the shorter of the two had curly, brown hair.
"Hey, Lola," the African-American boy smiled as he ran by, tilting his head once to me as he did, "Lola's freakishly-similar-looking friend,"
"She's my sister, Michael!" Lola shouted after him with a roll of her eyes.
"Well, that would explain it!" he called back over his shoulder, eliciting a laugh from me to which Lola sent me a sharp look.
Suddenly, the one with curls came racing by, sending a curt nod to Lola and then myself. His eyes lingered on me though, stumbling slightly in his haste. I sucked in a sharp breath at the prolonged eye contact.
His eyes were the color of a melted Hershey's chocolate bar, his hair falling in tousled light brown curls just below his ears. In a word? The boy was gorgeous.
He tore his gaze away then and raced away after Michael, disappearing as they both rounded a corner.
I bit my lip in awe and wonder as the sound of their footsteps receded, "Who was that?"
Lola waved a hand, "Michael and Logan. Pay them no attention - Michael's a softie but Logan's just a jerk,"
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "The rich kid one? Logan Reese?"
"One and the same." she nodded, quickly changing the subject as she heaved my heavy duffel-bag to me which I barely managed to catch before it the hit the ground, "Come on. Let me show you to your dorm. And you my lucky sister, you are going to be bunking with me and Zoey this year."
Lola chattered on about her friends and how she couldn't wait for me to meet Zoey, Chase, and even Quinn as we trudged to the dorms. But I couldn't seem to focus on her words.
Maybe I was out of my mind, maybe the erratic beating of my heart was something that, although beyond my comprehension, I should have stopped.
No one would understand - I knew that much already from what I'd learned of him through my sister. Gosh, even I didn't understand it! What I'd thought would be a reluctant friendship at best had now turned into something much different.
But it was undeniable - even from that very first day. I felt drawn to him in a way I couldn't explain by rational thought, almost as if an invisible thread bound us to one another.
In retrospect, a crush on Logan Reese was inevitable - for anyone.
But love?
Love had been the farthest thing from my mind.
