Chapter 5

I’m no good at flirting – especially when it’s forced. How was I supposed to get Sam to ask me out on a date? I couldn’t ask him; I needed him to think this was his idea, otherwise he might get suspicious.

‘Hi, Sam,’ I said, in what I thought was a flirtatious tone, ‘how’s it going?’

‘Oh,’ he seemed a little surprised by my tone, ‘its going fine. I was just taking measurements and everything. Are you alright? You sound... weird.’

‘I’m just fine, Sam. A little bit hungry-’ I immediately stopped talking. You just had lunch, you idiot! I moaned at myself mentally. How will I ever get him to ask me on a date?

‘Didn’t you just have lunch?’ He asked. I didn’t answer him. ‘How about you and me go out tomorrow night... at seven?’

Wow, that was easy – too easy. ‘Sounds great; we can have a chance to catch up and talk... you know, get to know each other a little bit better.’

‘Yeah,’ Sam smirked, ‘we should since we’re working together. I was thinking maybe we could offer gigs and birthday parties?’

Trust a boy to change the topic from something romantic to something more work-like. ‘Sure, we can go over that tomorrow. But on this... date – not date – thing – we do not mention anything to do with this business, agreed?’

‘Agreed,’ Sam smiled, ‘and it is a date.’

‘Alright, shmuck, don’t drag it too far.’ I nudged him. ‘It’s just dinner; not a date.’

‘Technically, it is a date.’ Sam raised his eyebrows, not needing to prove that it was a date.

‘Ok, fine. It is a date.’ I could stop smiling and I had sparks exploding inside of me. I think my heart just realised that Sam is my twin-soul.

‘If it’s alright with you, I won’t be here tomorrow. I have that birthday gig to do – remember I told you? The thirteen year old’s older brother’s girlfriend. I thought I could borrow some CDs?’ Sam said cautiously; clearly not wanting to ruin the plans for our date.

‘That’s fine but make sure you return them. If they want to buy it they can buy it from the shop.’ I said, feeling like I was floating.

‘Cool, thanks.’ Sam smiled and carried on working. ‘By the way... you look nice today.’ He went red from that compliment.

‘Oh, um... thank you.’ I said, a little taken aback that anyone would think I look nice.

My hair was back to its original blonde glory and it did look a lot better. My eye colour is hazel – not the traditional beautiful blue like Ryvre has or the tremendous brown that dad has. I learnt when I was little that if I was angry – like going to do something reckless angry – then my eyes was shimmer a white-yellow. The colour of electricity.

The rest of the day flew by and Sam walked me to the bus stop like he did when I first met him. The next day was quite lonely without Sam. He was the life of the hard work just like the music was of the shop. Ryvre and Ace came to visit me along with Georgia.

‘Long time, no see,’ Georgia smiled, ‘you’ve been busy.’ She nodded to the construction of the practise rooms.

‘Sort of, Sam’s been helping me with that.’ I smiled and secretly had butterflies flap around inside me.

‘So, are you going on a date with him?’ Ace asked, a little protectively – as a brother should be.

‘It’s not a date. We’re going out to get to know each other better – considering he is my employee – and it’s to find out if we can really trust him when he says he’s a white-soul.’ I explained as dusted the acoustic guitars.
