"What?" Jacqueline gasped, eyes widening. "I had a, I had a-"
Her father hugged her mother as she said in a despondent tone, "You were fourteen when I was pregnant. Then Jean Leroy was born on third August, healthy and perfect," she sighed. "We didn't know what happened. But my dearest boy survived for almost two years. And then, he died." She was crying now, full on tears as she sank down on the floor.
"W-Why didn't I-I know about this before?" Jacqueline managed to question, her breathing becoming uneven and her mind going frenzy.
I had a baby brother, and no one told me? How could this happen? Why did this happen? Why?!
"We had nothing to do with you," her father simply answered with a cold and reticent look in his eyes. "And we still don't."
Jacqueline closed her eyes for a few seconds and when she opened them back, they were gone. They had left. Her parents were gone.
She sank back on the bed as a wave of tears escaped her eyes. She had no idea what to think or what to do. The only word running in her mind was: brother.
And that's how Jacqueline ended up screaming again and again and again and again and again until Antonio came in her room rather late. Her eyes closed and she fell unconscious.
Only this time, not because of joy, but because of poignancy.
