'Your Initiation here, at Candor, is split into two sections,' said Tristan. We had come up to the Training room after breakfast for our first lesson of Initiation. 'For he first two weeks, you will be learning how to read body language to detect lies. Even the slightest movement can give someone away. These two weeks will be very easy, compared to the next two, during which you will be taking lie detector tests, all day, everyday.'
I had heard people talking about Candor initiation, and how there were lie detector tests, all day, every day, but I didn't know we would have two weeks of Initiation before that. Learning to read body language - I already knew that the Candor did that, though, so it wasn't actually a very big surprise for me.
'Today, we have computer generated images, and you have to decide which one is being honest, and which is lying,' said Tom. 'Next week, we will use simulations to make the environment more realistic, towards the end of the week.'
'We're going to start off by seeing what you can already figure out. Obviously, the Candor Initiates will already know this, so we're going to split you up into two groups.' Said Tristan. 'Candor Initiates, please follow Tom.' Emily, Lily, Jason, Adam, Paul, Jordan and James followed Tom to the other side of the large room, and the rest of us stayed with Tristan.
'Now,' said Tristan, and a large screen dropped down from the ceiling behind him. 'On this screen, images of people will appear, and you only have to decide if they're telling the truth, for the moment. Line up.'
The transfer Initiates lined up in front of the screen. I was standing behind Nathan, and in front of Chelsea. Ross, Jade and Leigh stood in front of Nathan, and Kristen, Alison and Amy stood behind Chelsea, in that order.
'Alright then,' said Tristan, indicating to Leigh, who was at the front of the line. 'What's your name?'
'Leigh,' she said.
'Okay, then, Leigh. Step forwards, and watch the screen.'
Leigh did as she was instructed, and as she stepped forwards, a harsh-looking police official appeared. 'Last night, a school was broken into and three children were kidnapped. We asked the cleaner, Mrs Derby, if she knew anything about the kidnapping.'
Then, the image of a crying old woman appeared on the screen. 'You have to believe me!' She weeped, wiping her eyes on a rag. 'I was at home when the children were kidnapped, and the doors and windows of the school were bolted properly! Please, believe me!'
The screen flashed off. 'So?' Said Tristan. 'Was she telling the truth, or lying?'
'Wha- the truth, of course!' Said Leigh.
'Wrong!' Said Tristan, as Leigh scurried to the back of the line. 'She was covering her eyes to avoid looking you in the eye, and she offered an alibi, even though she wasn't asked to provide one. She gave too much detail. A simple yes or no would have sufficed.
Who's next?' Jade stepped forwards tentatively. She pushed her light brown hair behind her ears as Tristan asked her name.
'Jade,' she replied, looking nervous.
'Okay,' he said, and the screen turned on.
The scene was very different to the one we had just witnessed. It was simply a fight between two teenage girls.
'I know you were with him last night!' The blonde girl said.
'No, I wasn't!' Said the brunette.
'Then, where was he?'
'I wouldn't know, would I?
'Well, where were you?'
