We went to breakfast, but I didn't eat. Chelsea was wearing her white dress, and I was wearing my black top and the white shorts. Ross wore a white top and black shorts, and Nathan wore the reverse.
'Mel, just eat something, it'll be fine,' said Nathan. He was the only one that knew why I was so nervous.
'Yeah, we all have to do it,' said Chelsea.
'And, anyway, I'll bet you're ranked first. seeing as you're the only one who never lied during the lie detector test, and you were ranked second before, so you'll be last! plenty of time to laugh at us three!' Said Ross, to lighten the mood.
The truth serum testing for the Initiates would take place in the main hall, in the very centre of the Merciless Mart. We would all be tested in the order of our ranks, from lowest ranked to highest ranked. Then, we would go into the dining room for a presentation, where we would choose our jobs, and finally we would have a party to celebrate becoming Members of the new faction. I just hoped I would still be welcome.
What if I couldn't get past the truth serum, and I accidentally told them I was Divergent? Or, if I could lie, what of they figured me out? These people were trained to detect lies. So were we - the new Initiates.
The Initiates were lined up outside the entrance to the main hall as many other Candor filed in. We would sit in the row at the front, after Tristan and Tom had put is in reverse order of our rank, to be organised.
Tristan was holding a sheet of paper, that undoubtedly had the ranks written on it. When we were all there, he read it out.
1) Melanie
2) Nathan
3) Lily
4) Chelsea
5) Paul
6) Adam
7) Ross
8) Jade
9)Jason
10) Emily
11)Jordan
12) Leigh
13 James
14) Kristen
15) Amy
16) Allison
We had already been told that the lie detector tests would play the most important part in determining out rank. I was still surprised that I managed to get away with not telling the whole truth so many times.
We filed into the white-floored room. In the centre of the black symbol in the middle of the room was a single chair.
'Welcome to the final stage of Initiation,' said Tristan. He and Tom were standing on either side of the chair. Tristan held a small black box, which undoubtedly contained sixteen syringes of blue serum.
'In a moment, our Initiates will be asked a series of questions. Once our final initiate has been questioned, we will proceed to the Dining Room for the presentation, where our initiates will proceed to choose their jobs, and then,' Tom finished his short speech with a smile, 'we party!' His words were greeted by applause from the Candor.
'With out any further unnecessary stalling,' said Tristan once the hall quietened. 'Let us begin with our first Initiate - Allison Turner!'
Everyone applauded and cheered as Allison stepped towards tentatively. She sat in the chair, and Tristan opened he box, took out a syringe, and injected it into her neck without hesitating. Allison gasped, but quickly relaxed.
