'Candor initiation sure goes on, doesn't it?' Said Nathan after he was changed, flopping down onto his bed.
'It's working, though, isn't it?' I said as I came into the room, towelling my hair dry. Chelsea and I had decided to hold towels up over the glass of the shower for each other, but we gave up after about five days. We were learning not to hold anything back - we weren't supposed to keep secrets, because people lie to keep secrets.
That's why I could never belong in Candor - because my Divergence would have to be kept a secret forever.
'What do you mean?' Said Nathan, as Ross turned the shower on behind us. Chelsea was lying on the bed, and I climbed up onto my bunk.
'Well, you wouldn't have said that if it hadn't.'
'It's the truth, isn't it?'
'Exactly,' was all I needed to say.
'Anyway, do either of you think your parents will come here? You know, for Visiting Day?' Said Chelsea.
I had almost forgotten. Tomorrow was visiting day.
Had I really only been in the Merciless Mart for a week and a half?
I still didn't think I fit in.
'I'm from Amity,' said Nathan. 'Amity and Candor are rivals, so I doubt it.'
'Well, in Amity, you value kindness, and it'd be kind for your parents to come. And anyway, more people transferred from Amity than from anywhere else.' I said.
'Yeah, but my parents take that stuff pretty seriously,' muttered Nathan.
'What about you, Mel?'
'I don't know,' I said. 'You?'
'My parents already said they would,' said Chelsea. 'Before the Choosing Ceremony, she said that wherever I chose, she'd come see me.'
'What if you chose Abnegation?' I said. Abnegation and Erudite were rivals. I heard that the Erudite didn't even let Abnegation into their headquarters, not even for Visiting Day, because that's how strong the rivalry was.
'I hope so,' said Chelsea, but she seemed uncertain.
Ross came out of the bathroom then, wearing the shorts and top he wore to sleep in. 'What about you?' Said Chelsea. 'Your parents coming tomorrow?'
'Probably,' he said.
'Cool,' said Chelsea.
We just chatted into the night, because we didn't have much else to do.
