Jace's POV

It's day five since the Matt incident and also since I last saw Matt. Ever since then he has been absent. Is he avoiding me? I'd probably do the same. Maybe he is actually sick? I pick at my food none of those thoughts curve my worry. I've been pep talking myself every day for this talk, but then he never showed up. The bell rings and I put up my lunch. As I finish writing on the board I see Morgan's cotton candy blue hair and I'm surprised to see light cotton candy pink hair follow behind.

"Sarah?" I ask surprised. She grins.

"Hey, Mr. Wolf! Did ya miss me?" She asks, both of them walking over to me.

"What are you doing here? I thought you had a week or two left? Did Morgan sneak you out again?" I ask casting a suspicious eye to Morgan.

"I just gave her a ride. She got out legally." Morgan says, holding up her hands.

"It's true. I got out for good behavior." Sarah says. I relax and smile.

"That's great. I'm glad you're back. How are things with the Wilder's?" I ask giving her a quick hug.

"It's great so far. I'm all moved in. I could have been back to school yesterday, but they wanted to spend a day with me to help the move in." She explains. "Oh my god! What is that?" She asks perking up and taking my left hand. "Did Luke propose?" She asks eagerly. I smile.

"Yes, he did." I answer. She squeals, much like the other girls that confronted me about it.

"That great! Congratulations!" She squeals.

"Thank you. Now, I'll help you get caught up on what you need. What lessons did you go over at the hospital?" I ask leading her over to my desk. Quickly, but not too quick, I start to catch her up on what she missed.

...

The bell rings at the end of the class period and my sixth period students start leave as my seventh period students start to enter. Sarah and Morgan wave and call-out a farewell as they leave. I get prepped for my next class expecting my recent problem to not be here again. I turn around after the bell rings and am surprised to see Matt sitting in his seat. My heart stutters with anxiety and I become nervous, but I force myself to act normal.

"Welcome everyone. Welcome back, Matt. Are you feeling better?" I say going over to my podium. It takes a moment for him to reply.

"Yeah." He replies simply.

"That's good. At the end of class if you could come talk to me I can catch you up on what you miss." I say. He gives a nod. Surprisingly, he isn't avoiding eye contact nor is he glaring. He's making eye contact with me and he looks... kind of... determined? I decide to ignore it for now hoping it's a good sign and continue on with my lesson.

After my lesson I sit at my desk and go through some papers as my students work for the last few minutes of class. Soon I notice someone stand next to my desk. I look up to see Matt looking down at me. I stiffen at the strong, unwavering gaze he is giving me and my mind brings me back to our last encounter.

"So...What did I miss?" He asks. I relax a bit and smile.

"A lot of poetry." I say. "But I made a copy of the poems and any worksheets. Here, I'll go over them a bit." I say placing the papers between us. He takes a step closer leaning down a bit to look at the paper. I start going over them and the tension seems to melt, at least for me as I focus on teaching. The bell rings and I look up in surprise. I'm also surprised at how close Matt has gotten. He has one hand leaning on the desk near my hand and the other is on the back of my chair, leaning close to me. He glances at me, not showing any signs of moving. "Um, do you have anything after school?" I ask. "I wouldn't want to cut into your practice or something else." I say, trying not to feel awkward. He shakes his head.
