The next day the boys and I gathered in front of the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom after Charms.

"So...This should be interesting," Lee mumbled as the door opened. We filed in and I took a seat next to Fred. Moody's classroom was filled with odd spectacles and ornate pieces of glass. Papers and jars of insects were messily arranged on his desk. Everyone took out their books and placed them on their desks.

A dull clunking of footsteps alerted us to Moody's arrival.

"You can put those away. You won't be needing them." He pointed to the books.

There was a pause before books were placed back into bags. "Right then, let's see who showed up for today's lesson."

He limped over to his desk and sat down before taking out a long scroll. One by one, names were called and his magical eye swiveled over the students that answered.

"Now, I've gotten a letter from Professor Lupin and he's informed me that your class has covered the majority of dark creatures, correct?" Multiple people nodded. "But you haven't covered curses. I'm here to teach you what they are and how to deal with particularly nasty ones."

"Curses. There's multiple types but they all aim to to one thing: maim. Now, according to the Ministry of Magic, I'm not exactly supposed to show illegal dark curses look like till your sixth year. Technically, I'm not supposed to show you at all but you're in your sixth year. I say, the sooner you know what you're up against the better. You need to be prepared. You need to be alert and watchful. So... do any of you know which curses are most heavily punished by wizarding law?"

Several hands rose into the air, including mine. Moody's magical eye whirled around until it landed on Alicia.

"Um... I've heard of one. The Imperius Curse..." She trailed off slightly.

"Ah, yes. The Imperius Curse. Total control over it's victim," he stood and reached for a large glass jar on his desk. Inside was a large spider. Next to the jar were two more jars that each held a similar spider. Moody reached inside the first and grabbed it. He pointed his wand at it.

"Imperio."

The spider began to twirl in the air. It leap off of his hand and onto a desk in the front row. The Slytherin girl sitting there shrieked and stumble back from her chair. The spider didn't appear to be doing anything malicious though. It's legs began twitching and it appeared as if it was dancing. Laughter filled the room but a bad feeling settled into my stomach.

"You think it's funny? What about if I did it to you?" Moody asked and the laughter died instantly.

"Many years ago, multiple wizards and witches claimed to do the bidding of You-Know-Who under the Imperius curse. It can be fought, but it takes real strength of character that many don't have." He picked up the spider and put it back into the jar.

"Anyone know of any others?" He asked.

Again, several hands rose into the air, but this time mine did not. Moody's eye rolled around until it settled a little behind me.

"There's the Cruciatus Curse, sir." Lee said.

Moody nodded and drew out a different spider than the one before. It cowered on the desk, too terrified to move. I feel bad for it.

"Let's make it a little bigger, just so you get the picture. Engorgio!

The spider swelled and grew to twice it's original size. Moody once again raised his wand to the creature, "Crucio!"
