i returned back to the junkyard and i quickly threw my new jacket onto the floor of my jeep so jack and sadie weren't onto me. sadie lay on the hood of her car looking at the sky. her eyes were closed and the rain hit her face.
i called her,"sadie, where's jack?"
she sat up and pointed to his car. i walked over to it and looked inside, he was asleep. then i looked back at the jugs, one had fallen over. i ran over to it and i wanted to cry. i sat it up and let rain pour into it once again. the others were full so i closed the tops and set them in the front seat of joes car. i sat in the grass, somewhat mad at jack for letting it happen since the rain was dying down and i had no idea when the next time it would rain. so i blamed it on myself. i shouldn't have went into millie's house, i should have been looking for jugs like i told jack i would do. i should have applied for a job like joe asked me. but i was immature and spent an hour and a half with a girl i barely knew. correction, a girl that was beautiful and i barely knew.it was now nine at night. jack finally finished his bike so we rode around the junkyard together until joe arrived back at 11:30. bikes are endless fun for homeless kids. the three of us welcomed him back and asked him what seemed like millions of questions on how his first day went. but he stopped us and out of complete selfishness he spoke,"how did you guys enjoy your rain showers?"
the three of us looked at each other and i said back,"it was fun, not as entertaining since you weren't here. maybe you can take one later tonight, i heard in town it might rain again."
joe's eyes widened,"did you apply, finn?"
"i-i forgot, i'm sorry joe."
joe ignored what i said and turned to sadie,"i need you to get over your fears, sade. we need you to work. finn isn't exactly legal yet and neither is jack. i need you to go to the drug store tomorrow and apply. they've had a sign up for weeks. can you do that for me?"
sadie hesitated but nodded yes.
joe nodded,"good. did the water jugs fill?"
i sighed,"eleven of them did. when i was out and i came back, jack was sleeping, sadie was daydreaming and one of them was knocked over. i'm sorry joe, it's my fault."
joe put his hands on my shoulders,"don't fret, finn. when it rains later and i take a shower, i'll put the twelfth one out."
i sighed in relief. joe spoke again,"i need you three to get to bed. get some rest and ill maybe see you all in the morning."
we all said goodnight to each other, except for poor sadie who just walked away.nights were always hard. the cushioned seats were always never cushioned enough. i never had a blanket, but i did have the jacket that millie gave to me so i wore that to bed; thankfully it was oversized on me. i used my arm as a pillow and soon i fell asleep.
