i was awoken by the sound of people singing. i sat up and then i remembered that it was my fifteenth birthday. i got out of the car and joe held out a lit match. i made a wish and blew it out. joe then handed me two dollars,"me and sadie have to go to work now, but take yourself out and get a new shirt, you deserve it, finn."
i smiled and thanked the three of them a million times over.

it was around 11:00am when i decided to head on my journey to town. i was wearing my only white tank top and jeans.
in my car, i only had a long sleeve shirt, two t-shirts, a tank top, jeans, and basketball shorts. then of course i had my bomber jacket and my hat.
i went inside the store and i had many faces staring at me, and then i knew why, my jacked up face from that devilish man.
with the two dollars i was given, i bought a pack of eight white t-shirts. after i was done in the store, i headed for millie's house.
she opened the door and gasped. she let me in and i explained everything. she was sorry for me and then made me a cup of coffee. we sat down on the couch and she asked me,"so, what brings you here today? other than telling me about your injury."
"i wanted to see you on my birthday."
her eyes widened,"oh my god, you're fifteen now?"
i smiled big at her expression, she was happier than i was because of my birthday. she started to ramble off like she did sometimes,"i didn't get you a present. what do you want? clothes, a shower, shoes, money—"
i grabbed her arm and laughed,"i don't need anything but your company at the moment."
she looked upset,"but i wanna get you something."
i let her go and she disappeared for a while, she came back with a towel and clothes,"here are some of my baggy sweatpants and my dad's shirt, take a shower and i'll wash your clothes."
"thank you, really," i said sincerely.

i hadn't taken a real shower in months. the hot water made my skin loosen. i closed my eyes and soaked it all in.

when i returned downstairs, millie had prepared snacks that sat on the coffee table in the living room. she was distracted but then i called her name. she shot around like i scared her,"movie night....day!"
i smiled,"i don't even know the last time i watched a movie."
millie then ran upstairs. i laughed at her silliness, i loved that about her. she was always so perky despite the recent loss of a friend, the loss of her mom, and having to cater to herself most of the time because of her dad's absence. i walked around the kitchen. i found two full coffee cups ready to be served. as she came down the stairs, i sat them both side by side on the coffee table. she stopped me and asked me to close my eyes and hold out my hands. i did as she told me and then she asked for me to open my eyes. i found fresh new socks and an unopened container of deodorant.
"i thought that you'd get white socks dirtier quicker so i grabbed you some black ones," she pointed to the deodorant,"i'd think you'd need this because i reckon you're super active, you can put it under your armpits and even on your feet. but i swear you don't smell without it, you just smell like the outdoors."
she continued to ramble and then she realized that i was tearing up.
she asked,"why are you crying, finn?"
"i've just never felt so cared for in my life,"i looked her in the eyes,"i really appreciate this, millie, thank you. now what movie are we watching first?"
she smiled and her face turned more pink than usual,"i was thinking the new movie 'weird science' or 'ghostbusters' or we could go for a good old 'e.t'"
i thought for a moment,"ghostbusters sounds interesting."
she became overly excited like she always does,"you're gonna love it, finnie!"
i questioned,"finnie?"
she got red again,"just a nickname, just like you call me mills," she put the disk in and the movie started to play.
