Irmina's POV

After putting on my 3DMG, I hopped onto my horse. My comrades did the same, and we headed outside of the walls in a straight line. After we made it outside the walls, my squad leader, Captain Levi, made sure we got into our mini formation before proceeding.

Me and Mikasa were placed in the first column so we could signal flare to the inner columns that we've come across a titan. Eren and Armin are on the inner left, Sasha and Connie are on the inner right. Jean stayed behind Captain Levi who was in the rear center. The other members that I haven't gotten to know very well took the positions that my friends haven't.

I heard footsteps and gave a look to Mikasa who understood what it meant. I shot up a red flare, then I moved apart my jacket to grab my two operating devices. I locked in the blades before pulling one trigger to shoot out the grappling hook. It pierced at the titan's leg, and then I reeled the hook back in to pull myself toward the limb. With a simple slice using both blades, I managed to immobilize the giant being. It fell to the ground with a loud thud. I got onto its back and ran towards its neck where I cut the nape.

"Irmina!" Mikasa's warning made me look to my right where a titan's hand was about to grab me. My eyes widened. I thought that this was it until Mikasa's quick thinking and movement was able to detach the hand off of the titan. I took this opportunity to jump off the titan I killed and hop back into my horse while Mikasa took care of the titan. Its hand was steaming as it tried to regenerate it back. But before it could fully grow back, Mikasa stripped the titan of its flesh on its nape.

We both ran with our horses, only the two of us left behind as the rest proceeded.

"Where do you think they are now? I don't think this will count as a successful expedition if we're not all together." I asked.

"Look at the footprints." Mikasa pointed out. The moist dirt had tracks from their horses.

"Okay, let's follow it." I kicked the side of my horse, making her run faster. As we followed the track, there were pieces of blades scattered on the ground. This means others came across titans as well.

I could hear something being shot. Someone shot up a flare. I looked to see that it was yellow. Training expedition has come to an end and we had to get back to camp.

"I thought you guys died!" Eren scolded me and Mikasa.

"Are you saying that you didn't think we were skilled enough to survive on our own?" I raised my voice. Mikasa and I are completely capable of taking care of ourselves both in and out of these damn walls.

I stormed away, Mikasa staying with Eren. She liked it when Eren was protective of her, she even liked it the other way around.

I plopped down on my uncomfortable bed that's provided for us. I wonder if we failed. I mean, the objective was to slay as many titans as we could on our first expedition, but my squad separated.

I sighed and tried not to think about it. It's not like they're going to tell us we're no longer a soldier here and to pack our bags.

I scoffed. I graduated in the top 10! I did everything right.

I woke up from my nap to the sound of banging in the mess hall. Out of curiosity, I got up to see what it was.

"Using your skills to get away from the titans? That doesn't seem to add up, does it?" Eren yelled at Jean.

"This is the real world, Eren! You wouldn't know because you have these fantasies in your head where you kill every single titan!" Jean spat back.

Mikasa parted the two, gently setting Eren's hand down.

Out of sudden rage, Jean grabbed the collar of Eren's shirt.

"Screw you!"

"Huh?! Let go, you're going to rip it!"

"I don't give a damn about your shirt! I'm jealous!"

"What are you talking about?!" Eren was confused and pissed as Jean held the collar of his shirt for an unknown reason.

For a moment, I saw Eren freeze, a thing he did when he was deep in his thoughts.

Suddenly, he pulled a move that he learned the hard way from Annie in training.

"Noisy brats." I heard Captain Levi say to himself as he took a sip of his coffee. Why didn't he do anything to stop them? He was the one who held the highest power in this room, too.

"Eren, calm down. Maybe you need some sleep." Mikasa tried calming him down, but as the stubborn person he is, it didn't work. So Mikasa went to her last resort and forcefully dragged Eren to his room, embarrassing him in front of everyone.

Armin went to tag along, and I was left alone. Captain Levi left the room as well. I went to run after him.

"Captain Levi!" I yelled, finally reaching him. He turned around and stared down at me. It was only until now that I realized how short I was compared to him.

"What do you want?" He sounded annoyed. Like always.

"Why didn't you do anything back there? They could've gotten hurt and-" He interrupted me.

"I don't have time to break up a childish fight. They're 19, they can handle it." He was about to walk away before I called out to him again.

"Where'd you learn to use a knife like that?" I asked, referring to our private lesson from before. Without turning around, he answered.

"My uncle taught me...Years ago I wasn't who I am now. The only way to defend myself was with that small blade." With that, he started to walk away again. This time I didn't stop him. He wasn't who he used to be? How bad could it have been for a knife to be necessary in combat?
