***Veronica’s POV***
When I walked out into the hallway, I immediately smelled the intensity of Hannah’s cooking. She may be a stuck-up business major, but she can cook when she wants to. It was unusual for my house to smell so much like.. a home. It was usually empty, and I was the only one who cooked most of the time, aside from Timothy’s macaroni and cheese.
When I stepped into the dining room, I tried to act like I didn’t just find out the guy I had a crush on is actually my half-brother, but I knew that someone was eventually going to detect my nerves.
As expected, when I was pulling out my chair, I felt a hand on my back, and turned to see Jacob with a concerned look on his face. I didn’t really know what to think of it, considering he just blew up at me about Alexa, so I waited for him to say something so that I could test his mood.
“Is everything alright?” He asked me, no trace of anger from earlier in his words.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I tried to think of a convincing lie. “I just got upset when we fought earlier, that’s all,” I knew that if I pretended something else was wrong, he would feel bad for me and drop the subject. I was getting a lot better at this acting thing, it seemed like I was lying a lot more often, and I didn’t know if that was necessarily a good thing.
“Oh, okay. Well tell me if anything else is up, okay?” He replied, pulling out the chair next to me. I nodded in response, turning away quickly. It hurt me to lie to him, but there wasn’t really thing else that I could do to help the situation at hand.
Everyone gathered around the table, and soon enough we were all eating together, almost as if we were a real family, not a broken one full of secrets and lies.
We didn’t bother saying a prayer before we started to eat, we weren’t really the spiritual type. Whenever I was over at Jc and Kara’s it was different, and I think I liked it better that way.
“So Justin, what do you like to do?” Alexa asked from the right side of Jacob, with almost a teasing tone in her voice. She already had my brother, did she really have to try and charm my.. friend too?
“I like music, I mean I play the guitar, but other than that, I mostly just like to hang out with my friends,” Jc answered, and I could tell he was trying not to laugh. He was trying to make a good impression on my family, I just knew it, but it was awkward, because it’s not like we were actually dating or anything.
“OMG! Ronnie plays the guitar too! And she sings! Did you know that?” Alexa squealed excitedly, and I shot a glare at Jacob. It still never made sense to me why she acted like such a child.
“Yeah, I did, we’re in the same guitar cla-”
“That makes sense why you’re such a great couple, then. Because you have so much in common,” Alexa cut him off, singing her words.
Did they just not get that we were friends? It made everything worse when they said that, because it just reminded me of the fact that we weren’t just friends, we were siblings.
Well, half-siblings.
Still.
“We aren’t a couple, Lex. How many times do I have to say that?” I said, irritated, and Alexa’s response was just a pout. Jc elbowed me, and then looked at me for a few seconds before speaking up.
“I think that we should tell them, Veronica,” He said in a slightly hushed tone, but loud enough to where I knew that everyone else heard him. The utensils stopped moving, and the room fell silent.
I gave Jc a panicked look, I was so confused. He just practically made me swear not to tell anyone about the information we uncovered in my bedroom.
