***Connor's POV***
I couldn't believe who was standing in front of me.
This had to be a joke.
A really sick joke.
I realized that I hadn't moved since Jennifer slinked past me into the kitchen after her mother. I turned to Veronica and gave her a sympathetic look.
"How did you not know?" She asked me quietly.
"They have different last names, I never would've guessed," I responded.
Looking over Ronnie's shoulder into the kitchen, I saw that Jennifer was putting on a very good act. I wondered if her mother even knows who she is.
"We have to get out of here," I added in a hushed tone.
I didn't want Jennifer to say anything to Ronnie. I couldn't even stand the idea of them in the same room. I was beginning to pick up Ronnie's bag off of the coffee table when she spoke up.
"No, we can't," She said, softly taking her bag and placing it on the table. "If we leave, then Jennifer wins. We can't give her the satisfaction of running you out of your own house. And besides, that would be embarrassing for your father."
"Why do you care so much about my father?" I asked, trying to stay calm.
I really just wanted to get her out of here, but Veronica was very stubborn and I know that she wouldn't budge easily.
"Because, he's turned out better than mine and I want you to give him a chance," She snapped and then walked towards the kitchen.
Why wouldn't she just listen to me? Can't she tell that I have just been trying to protect her? I watched as she sat down at the kitchen counter and began to talk to my father.
Jennifer walked around the counter and plopped down right next to Veronica. They both began to laugh when my father said something, and I just couldn't believe it. How could she be laughing with someone like that?
I walked to the counter and sat on the other side of her. I scooted my chair closer to her and put an arm around her waist. She shook it off immediately and continued the conversation. I wished that she would just trust me sometimes, but I know that it's hard for her to do that.
Kinley gave me a strange look when she walked into the kitchen and I realized that she recognized Jennifer. She looked very confused so I gestured for her to go into the other room and I followed.
"Is that..?" She asked as soon as we were out of earshot from the others.
"Yeah," I cut her off.
I couldn't help it, I was pretty pissed off.
"What is she-" She started again.
"She's Michelle's daughter. I never would've guessed," I stopped her mid sentence.
"Does Ronnie-" She began again.
"Yeah, she does. Well she knows pretty much everything. I wanted to get her out of here but she wouldn't budge. She said that it was important to my father or something. Why does she care?" I snapped again.
"Ok Connor," She said slowly and then paused. "You really need to calm down. And stop interrupting me. Ronnie's right, you should give him a chance. He is our dad after all. She will be fine here with Jennifer, I promise."
"You don't know Jennifer like I do," I said slightly calmer, but still harshly.
"Well obviously," She remarked and that nearly sent me off the edge.
