***Veronica’s POV***
“It’s this next left, then the second building on the right,” I said to Jennifer.
I had a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach about seeing Jc. It wasn’t a nervous, I like you feeling, it was more of a.. please don’t kill me because I’m telling you exactly what you don’t want to hear feeling.
When I looked over at Jenny, I could tell that she was just as nervous about being yelled at, or just ignored. She gave me a forced smile and we both looked forward towards the apartment building.
Suddenly, the air in the car felt very suffocating, so I opened my door quickly and hopped out. Jennifer popped the trunk and came round the back to where I was struggling to lift the box.
“You know, maybe we should just deal with this some other time, it’s really not that important…” I trailed off, leaving the box for Jenny to hold herself.
“You already made it this far, honey, you can’t just back out now,” She replied.
Just as I was about to retaliate, I heard front door of the apartment building lobby slam hard, causing me to look in it’s direction.
“You are a disgrace!” A man yelled, pointing behind him.
“Headmaster Brooks?” Jenny said quietly, looking at the steaming man rushing out of the building.
In a few more seconds, Kara came rushing out of the door after her dad.
“Dad, wait, I can explain this! Please don’t just leave! I need you to listen to me!” She called after her dad who was now jumping into the car and starting it as fast as he could to leave.
As soon as he drove off, I ran up to where she was sitting on the sidewalk, balling her eyes out. I didn’t know what was going on, but as soon as I walked up to her, she hugged me, staining my shirt with mascara.
“Ar- are you okay?” I was surprised to hear Jennifer’s voice from behind me.
Kara backed away from me to look up at Jenny.
“What the hell is she doing here?” She asked, then switched her gaze to me. “And why are you even hanging out with her, Ronnie?”
I didn’t really know what to say to that. My friendship with Jennifer had kind of just sprouted out of nowhere. She really wasn’t that bad of a person once you got talking to her.
“You know you don’t have to talk about me like I’m a piece of trash. I know that I’ve been that before, trust me. But I’m really sorry for that and I’m trying to change. And I know it’s none of my buisness, but I know what it’s like to be punished by your parents because you’re just being yourself. So are you okay? Because I really want to know,” Jennifer said, calming down at the end.
I gave Kara a look that said ‘she really is trying’ before I noticed Grace walking slowly from the lobby area. I then realized what must have been going on.
“Kara, I’m so sorry, it’s all my fault,” She said, running up to her girlfriend once she caught sight of her.
“It’s not your fault, don’t say that. I didn’t know that he was coming over, I didn’t know he would see us-” Kara stopped abruptly before she said anything too revealing, and then looked at me. She didn’t know that I knew.
Kara’s dad must have walked in on them together. He was a really conservative guy, so he must have been pretty upset about it. And it made sense that Kara didn’t know he was coming, because this was her mom’s apartment, her dad lived across town.
