***Veronica’s POV***

“Okay, where should we start then?” I asked nervously, my hands not knowing what to do, hovering slightly over the box.

Jc sighed deeply and closed his eyes for a moment before saying, “I guess you can just show me whatever you’ve already looked at, and then we can go from there.”

Reaching down in the stack of papers, I pulled out the few letters that I had already read. I waited patiently as he read them, trying to recall what all was going on.

“So your mom was.. insane?” Jc asked.

“That’s just one of the things that I’m really not sure about. She seemed so conflicted in her letters, like she was out of her mind. I didn’t read all of them though, I got kind of.. freaked out. I mean, if she really was crazy, then what about me? Does that mean that I’m going to be crazy too?” I realized how fast I was talking when Jc cut me off.

“Veronica, first off, you’re not crazy. And second, you just need to breathe and stop trying to think too much about this. I understand that it’s a lot to take in all at once, but I’m here. Just remember that, okay? I really am here for you, as much as I hate all of this,” Jc explained.

His words really did comfort me, so I nodded in response. I knew that I wasn’t going to stop overanalyzing things though, it was just in my nature to do so.

We read through most of the letters, and they were all pretty much the same thing, nothing important. She kept bringing up us kids, and something about Timothy going to the hospital. None of it made any sense, and it was frustrating the hell out of me.

My phone buzzed on the table and I picked it up to see that it was Jennifer calling. I picked it up and put it on speaker phone.

“Hey,” I said as soon as I set the phone down. “Are you going to come back?”

“Yeah, but I was wondering, is it okay if Connor comes too?” She asked hesitantly.

Keeping my gaze down, I responded.

“Yeah, sounds good. See you guys in like ten minutes?”

“More like five. We’re already on our way,” She said before hanging up the phone.

Looking up, I could now see the angry expression on Jc’s face. I knew that if I looked at him during the call, I wouldn’t have been able to say that it was okay for Connor to come over.

“Why’d you do that? You think you can just invite random people into my house now?” He was so calm that it scared me.

“We need all the brainpower we can get. I know you don’t particularly like Connor, but the fact is, before all of this happened, he was my best friend. And he knows my family really well, so he might have picked up on something that I didn’t. So do you think that you can just handle it for, like, twelve seconds?” I said, snipping the ends of my sentences.

At this, Jc didn’t respond at all, he just started to quietly chuckle to himself. This made me extremely annoyed, really fast.

“Can you stop that? It’s really irritating.”

He just laughed even louder, and I was thoroughly confused.

I swatted at his arm, trying to knock some sense into him, but by this point, I started giggling too.

“Just look at us, bickering. Almost like.. siblings,” He explained the source of his abstract fit of laughter.

We continued on like that for a few minutes, sorting envelopes and papers and pictures, occasionally bursting out in giggles once again. Even though we still didn’t much know what was going on, we tried to sort out the contents of the box enough so that we could make sense of it when Connor and Jennifer showed up.
