CHAPTER 37: HIDDEN AGENDA
How could I be less selfish
without giving you up?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't sleep.
I opened my eyes for the twentieth time after failing to bring myself to slumber. My gaze fell upon the clock that hung adjacent to the door – 1:09 am, it read. Sighing, I pulled the bed sheets over my body clothed with thin, black, silken nightgown that reached only up to half my thigh's length, tucking myself in the most comfortable position for another attempt to doze off. No matter how comfortable my bed was and regardless of the frosty winter air kept my room cool, I couldn’t bear to clear my mind of the things that hammered wildly through my consciousness.
Trrrgggg…
Trrrgggg…
Trrrgggg…
I watched my mobile phone vibrate, spinning slowly atop my bedside table. Groggily, I picked the call up without bothering to check the caller ID.
I knew I did not have to.
- What's wrong?
And I did not have to ask how he found out that something was wrong. Sometimes, I could not help but wonder if Kosuke was a natural telepathist.
"I couldn't sleep…"
- Thinking too much again?
"Probably…"
- I couldn't sleep either. I figured that it's because I'm thinking about you too much.
- So take a break from thinking too much about me so that you can go to sleep, hehe.
"Silly!" I bit my lips to keep myself from bursting into giggles.
- Wait for me. I'm going there right now.
"W… What?! Right now? But…"
Beep.
I looked up to the wall clock once again, estimating how long I had to wait for him to arrive. Probably twenty minutes… or thirty… maybe an hour or two? I smiled as I buried my face on the pillow. For a moment, I felt like a high school girl once again, waiting for her date to fetch her on prom night.
But not five minutes had passed by when all of a sudden…
Knock knock…
"Huh?"
I slowly pulled myself up from the bed and put on my robe. Barefooted, I walked towards my door and unlocked it. I could not believe my eyes the moment I saw the person standing by my doorstep.
"Hehe," Kosuke chuckled like a kid.
"EH?!" my eyes widened in surprise. "B…But… But… how did you…"
"Told you I had powers," he winked. "Teleportation!" His silliness always made me smile.
Then, my gaze fell upon the bright green shirt he was wearing, "And what… is… hehe… What is that you're wearing?! Hahaha…"
He frowned as I continued to laugh at his kiddie T-shirt, where a picture of an anime character was printed on, "Why? What's wrong with my shirt?"
"Heeheeheehee… Nothing…"
"Hey, don't you know who this is?" Kosuke pointed towards the blond cartoon character on his bright green shirt. "This is Naruto!"
"And a lawyer like you likes Naruto?! Heeheeheehee…"
