CHAPTER 63: SPECK OF DUST

Betraying you was the only way to save your life.

"I‘M GONNA KILL ALL OF YOU!" Rei shouted in rage, his stance impaired by the multiple gunshot wounds he received on his left shoulder, left flank, and right thigh. "WE HAD A GODDAMN DEAL, DMITRI WILLIAMS! YOU'RE A FUCKING SNAKE!"

"And you're a dumb, helpless little love bird, Yoshifumi Rei," Dmitri Williams said. "You're so strong, so good in fighting yet too easy to fool. But I was tolerant with you in particular because you remind me of my favorite son, Silas. He was obedient to his father too."

"Don't compare me to your dead son," Rei spitted out blood in disgust. "Our goddamn deal was that I'd swindle Yoshida Ayane’s money so that you can seize the Vault! I agreed with the game-plan you and Father set because I thought we had the same goal."

"Haha! Don't wash your hands now, Yoshifumi Rei," Dmitri chuckled mockingly. "Even without your father's advice, we both know that you deliberately agreed to my proposal."

"THAT was because you said that you were going to use the Vault to destroy the Spectra!" Rei reasoned. "THAT was because I was pushed into a situation where in I had to hurt and betray Ayane-chan in order to save her life! All I wanted was to take away the burden of revenge from her hands!"

"But you failed," Dmitri interjected.

"I failed because you TRICKED me!"

"Stop rationalizing your imprudent decisions, Yoshifumi Rei. Why don't you just admit it?" Dmitri said with a taunting tone. "The truth is that you simply couldn't accept the fact that Yoshida Ayane dumped you for Yamazaki Kosuke. You WANTED to hurt Yoshida Ayane, and by accepting my offer to betray her together and then destroy the Spectra next so that you can get your own selfish revenge for your dead mother, you knew that my proposition was the perfect opportunity to hit two birds with one stone!"

Rei fell silent.

"Now you can't answer?" Dmitri raised an eyebrow. "You can't answer because what I said was true."

"I did it because I was angry… at that time."

"At that time? Hah! Are you saying now that you're regretting what you've done? Yoshifumi Rei, it's too late to be sorry now. It's not my business to listen to any more of your rationalizations. You're the one who messed up, not me," Dmitri shrugged. "Had you stayed in Switzerland after the flight suspension order was lifted, things wouldn't have gone this way. But what did you do? You suddenly changed your mind, came back here to Japan, and discovered something you shouldn't have. If you just obeyed your father like you always did, you wouldn't have to be here right now, bleeding to death."

Crosse could not comprehend what he just heard. Yoshifumi Rei discovered something he shouldn't have? What is father talking about?

"You… no… ALL of you… You fooled not only me but ALL OF US!" Rei readied his sword and handgun. "I'M NOT GOING TO ALLOW ANYONE OF YOU TO TAKE ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO THAT BEACH HOUSE WHERE AYANE IS, SMILING AND LIVING A PEACEFUL LIFE AT LAST AFTER EIGHT YEARS! YOU'D HAVE TO KILL ME FIRST!"

"Then have it your way," Dmitri gave his signal. "By all means, DIE!"

BANG!

BANG!

BANG!

Rei leaped up from the ground, swinging his sword towards the nearest man pointing a gun at him. With his swift movements, he twirled midair and deflected the bullets with rapid swishes of his sword. Bringing one of his assaulters down, he quickly grabbed his gun and began firing towards the enemy, who equally aimed their weapons madly towards him and…
