"So, you never actually told me how tour went. What happened?" Jess asked Alex as they sat with each other on her living room couch. Her mother was cooking dinner and invited Alex to stay and eat. Of course he agreed. It was only going to be the three of them. Jess's father was off on business like usual, and Vic and Viv wouldn't be home on summer break until after May.
"Well, we played and people sang along as loud as they could. I can't help but think that we really are getting somewhere. Like, maybe one day we will turn out like Green Day or something. We have to start somewhere just like they did, you know? After the shows, we went out to our merch table and met people and signed stuff. People were actually interested in us. We had conversations with people all night long until they kicked us and everyone else out, when they were closing. It was amazing. I wish you could've been there." He grinned as he spoke. That made Jess smile. She loved seeing him happy, and from seeing where this band has come from, she was beyond happy that they're getting the recognition they deserve. She loved these boys more than anything. They were her best friends after all.
"That's awesome." She smiled. She kind of wondered what it was like to be in his position. To have people singing the songs you wrote back to you. To perform on a stage in front of lots of people. Yeah, she'd performed before but it wasn't the same. It wasn't like she wrote the music, or that anyone really cared who she was. She could never write a song. Yeah, she was smart and all but she played drums for a reason- so she didn't have to read notes. She hated it. She enjoyed playing music, but she could never write it. She thought Alex was a plain genius just because he could. She didn't see how he did it.
"Hey, during the summer since nothings going on, you should come with us or something." He suggested. He was hopeful that she would agree, but he didn't know. It wasn't like she couldn't have come before on the breaks they had. She just didn't, there had to be some reason why. He missed her, he wanted her to come along and experience what he did. Even if she wasn't the one on the stage performing, it was still awesome. He knew what she could do, join Vinny in selling merch.
"I'd like that." She smiled.
"I'm going to go check the mail really quick, make sure the pasta doesn't boil over." Her mother said. Jess didn't think a thing of it when she said that.
"Okay, but I'm sure it won't boil over in the midst of ten seconds." Jess laughed. Her mother smiled but rolled her eyes and rushed out the door. She returned quickly, glancing over the many bills and junk mail. Until she got to one that looked unfamiliar. It was addressed to Jess.
"What's this?" She asked, handing her the letter. Jess's heart started beating fast as she looked at the letter in front of her. To Jessica Vaughn from University of Maryland. Her mother was confused, as was Alex. She'd been talking about getting into college but she never mentioned applying to any, let alone the best one in the state. She ripped open the envelope, and pulled out the official piece of paper. All she read was; Dear Miss Vaughn, Congratulations! Before she starting yelling. She had tears in her eyes. She was jumping up and down. Alex and Mrs. Vaughn were smiling too, but that obviously meant she got in.
"I-I got in!" She exclaimed. Alex grinned and stood up, pulling her into a hug.
"I didn't know you applied." Her mother was confused, but still happy as ever.
"I didn't want to tell anyone, in case I didn't get in." She shrugged. She kept glancing at the letter, still amazed she actually got in. It had been so long since she'd applied, she was almost positive she wouldn't even hear back. Instead, she got her own spot. A dorm and everything. Now she was beyond excited, and thought maybe she could take a break from everything if only for a minute. Touring with Alex and the guys didn't sound like such a bad idea anymore.
