"Are we upgrading?" I asked as Lexi pushed me into the room. Jameson ignored me as I stumbled slightly, nearly dropping my pizza in the process.

"No," Lexi admitted sheepishly. "We're downgrading."

I frowned at her, but didn't get an answer as she turned to close the door after Jace followed me in the room.

"Take a seat." Lexi announced. Jace and I scoured out seats, and Jace decided to sit on Jameson's bed. Or, he was going to, before Jameson spoke up.

"Not there." He said as I pulled out a desk chair. I threw him a frown, watching Jace fumble in shock. The bitterness in Jameson's voice had startled both him and me, and I shook my head in disapproval.

"Here," I said, pulling out the chair I was going to sit on for Jace. "Sit here." I offered, watching his perplexed expression turn thankful. I shot him a small smile before taking a seat on Jameson's bed, watching for a reaction out of him.

Lexi, seemingly oblivious to this—or just not bothered at all—walked over to the map/investigation board to commence our meeting.

"Jameson and I have been in an important meeting for a while. And whilst we can't divulge any of the information spoken about, it's clear that we need to take action." Lexi told us.

I frowned, glancing between Jace and Lexi. "We're not your new recruits, are we?" I asked Lexi doubtfully, who smiled in response.

"God, no." Lexi responded, throwing Jace and I panicked looks. I narrowed my eyes at her, making her expression relax and her lips turn up into a sheepish smile.

"I mean, you...you just missed the application date." She told us.

"Our meeting today didn't go so well," Jameson spoke up from the corner of his room, completely ignoring us as he folded his arms over his chest. "It's clear to say that the Academy has no idea what it's doing."

"I second that." Lexi added, raising her arm in the air. I glanced between them with a probably puzzled expression. The Academy is all I've ever known. The Academy is meant to be a safe place for me. It's name, after all, translates to 'Safe Haven'.

Back at home, it was the only place that I wanted to be. On May eighteenth, it was the only safe haven that I knew existed. In that cage, it was the only thing keeping me sane and alive.

"Wh–what happened?" I asked, stumbling over my words as I tried to ignore the shock I was feeling. Both Lexi and Jameson's expressions grew grim.
