The entire weekend went by blissfully making love to each other until they fell into a slumber from pure exhaustion, discussing names and plans for the nursery. Stevie was becoming confident in her pregnancy despite the pain that would occur when the mysterious woman would appear. She now began to hear a male voice, causing her to call Lindsey his first day back to work to make sure he didn't slip in without her noticing somehow. She put it down to just missing him, instead of letting her husband worry about her mental state.
Lindsey would be taking off early for their doctor's appointment, as they would be doing an ultrasound, taking lots of measurements and possibly finding out the sex of their baby. Stevie was so excited at the prospect of finally being able to choose colors and decor. Lindsey joked that it was her favorite part of the pregnancy, the shopping. Secretly, he was excited to shop too.
"Remember, little one, don't be shy for the doctor. Mommy and daddy want to buy you everything your little heart desires. We need to know if you're a little boy or a little girl." Stevie said to her unborn child, getting ready before Lindsey got home. She smoothed her bump. "Seems like you have had a growth spurt in there. Maybe mama can convince daddy to take her dress shopping, what do you think?" The baby kicked and she giggled. "I hope you're right!"
She heard the door unlock, and she paid no mind, knowing it was Lindsey. She continued to work on her makeup, thinking about what she would wear.
Walking into the room next door where their wardrobes were she saw Lindsey
"Baby, what on earth are you wearing?" She asked chuckling, walking to him and tapping his behind
"These do nothing for your amazing ass!" Lindsey didn't say anything, just stood looking out the window
"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" She joked, she was about to pull him round when she heard a voice behind her
"Sorry I'm a little late, baby, I had a couple of things to finish off!" She whipped round at the speed of light, seeing her husband in the door way...her husband...if Lindsey was there, who the hell was she just talking to?
She turned back to the window and the man was gone.
"I thought I heard you laughing..." Lindsey said. When Stevie turned back her face was pale and she had a sick feeling in her stomach. She placed a hand on her belly. "Are you okay?" She nodded, trying not to cry. What the hell was going in her home? She would be bringing a baby into the house in just four months and she was terrified. "Okay..." he said, watching her walk past him and out of the room. "Steph, are you ready to go?"
She needed to speak, to say something. "Uh-huh..." was all she could manage.
"After our appointment, we can do a little shopping for the baby and have lunch at this incredible little bistro Ginger at work told me about. She said its 'adorable', her words not mine, so I know you will just love it!" He kissed her cheek, her eyes were still blank and staring. "Did something happen before I got here? What's going on?"
She shook her head, almost as if to physically erase what just happened from her mind. "I'm fine Lindsey, let's get going. Did you say something about shopping and eating?"
He chuckled. "You're so cute! Yes, yes I did."
"So tell me about this bistro..." Stevie asked, going downstairs with Lindsey, now chatting happily.
A woman in an old Victorian dress stood at the top of the staircase staring at them. She had tears falling down her face as she watched the couple below. She clutched her stomach and screamed, disappearing into thin air. Stevie turned around quickly, thinking she had heard something as she grabbed her purse from the hall closet.
"Steph, are you listening?" Lindsey asked, stopping.
"Huh? Uh-huh, yes, that sounds delicious!" she said, both of them walking out the door to the car.
Arriving at their appointment they were excited to see their child again, Stevie was used to the coolness of the gel now, she knew it meant she'd get to see and hear their bean
"Right, you ready?" The nurse asked and they both nodded. The screen came on and as the transducer was moved around they heard a steady heartbeat
"There they are!" The nurse pointed to a clear figure on the screen, Stevie could make out some fingers this time
"Linds look! Aren't they precious!" She cried, Lindsey agreeing in the same manner
"Ready to know what you're having?"
"Definitely!"
"Well I can tell you...that you've got a healthy little boy growing in there!"
"A boy!" Stevie exclaimed, sobbing and throwing her arms around Lindsey, careful not to get any gel on him.
"A little boy, Steph." He looked at her, tears in his eyes, cupping her cheeks. He kissed her lips tenderly but passionately, their tears mingling together. "Oh, honey, I can't believe it!" He heard Stevie still sobbing heavily and he rubbed her back. "God, I love you both so much" The nurse stayed silent, letting them have their moment.
"We've waited so long!" she wailed. "We're having a perfect little boy!" She pulled back, trying to wipe her tears. "Oh my goodness, I shouldn't have spent so much time on my makeup" Tears were still evident in her voice and they poured down her cheeks. Lindsey chuckled.
"You're beautiful anyway." He kissed her knuckles, letting the nurse continue with her measurements. Stevie couldn't stop crying and she knew Lindsey was trying to hold back. All the trouble was worth it, knowing they were finally going to be a family- Stevie, Lindsey and their beloved son.
