Chapter 8 – Feeling Strange

"I lied to myself that it's just petty jealousy, that I must be feeling lonely."

"BUSY huh?" Joshua did not wonder whose voice was that. He knew that it was Joely who spoke. He was currently doing his thesis again for the nth time. It was Friday night and it was a routine that Joely would stay at his place especially if she had a fight with her father.

He did wonder about the matter between Joely and her father but he did not ask anything about it to her. He wanted to hear that directly from her without asking.

It was a few days that Joshua got used to being with Joely. There were times that he found her already in his room after school but there were times that she only would come when he heard some shouts coming from her house—when she and her father were having a quarrel again. He did not even try removing the rope hanging on his window to give her access to enter his room. So when there were times that she was not in his room, he felt empty and found his room without colors—like black and white. Lonely and not lively.

"I want to finish this before the deadline comes," Joshua said. "I think I could finish it this weekend."

"When is the deadline?" Joely asked.

"After next week."

"But you are rushing to finish it this weekend?"

"Yeah."

Joshua's brows furrowed as Joely snatched the laptop from him. He saw her saving his work before shutting down the laptop. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"You should take a break. Let's go?"

"Where to?"

"Somewhere you could relax. You shouldn't drown your mind with those requirements. Sometimes you need to breathe and take a break."

"I'm breathing, though."

"Do I need to laugh?"

"Go on."

Joely just gave Joshua a straight face. "Being mean doesn't suit you, Mr. Gentleman."

"I was not mean. I was trying to make fun of you."

"That doesn't suit you as well."

"So how's the setup?" Joshua asked, changing the topic. "Even if I would tell you that I'm too busy to go out and hang out but knowing you, I think you'll just insist so I'll just give up."

"Good thing you know," Joely said. "Anyway, you could just simply go out and meet me at the gate. I'll just do the usual." Joely answered, looking at the window.

Joshua felt something's wrong with her idea. He would just simply get out by the door while Joely would struggle to climb down by the window even though he knew that she was used to doing the thing. How was that even possible? He's a man after all. I think I should do the same.

"I-I'll just climb down there, too." Joshua said.

"What? You are just making things complicated, boy." Joely stated. "Were you thinking of me, as a girl, climbing down by the window while you, as a guy, going out of the house by the door? Am I right?"
