"Are we late? How do I look? Do you think Charlie's already here?"rambles as we walk up the steps to the gym, which has been turned into a make-do ballroom of sorts. I hear music pouring out of the doors.
"No. Beautiful. Probably." I answer her questions consecutively. For the first time, I'm actually excited about a dance. In the past, I've usually been forced into going by my parents or Beth. This time however, I'm excited to spend more time with George. Part of me is also excited about observing Will's behaviour and gaining a conformation of his character described by George.
Just before we enter the hall, I smooth down my and fiddle with necklace. Jane opens the door and we walk in. The room is a glowing purple colour, with lights twinkling across the walls beautifully. Most of the space in the room is occupied by people dancing to the upbeat song that's being played. I take a deep breathe and stand on my tiptoes beside Jane, scanning the room for George's figure. When I don't immediately spot him, I let Jane know that I'm going to look for him. She nods and walks off, presumably towards Charlie.
When I spoke to George in the hallway yesterday in school, he had definitely told me he was coming. In fact he told me he was looking forward in spending an evening with me. It never crossed my mind that he might not turn up. I walk over to the punch table where he told me to meet him and wait. After I've waited for a while I spot Denny.
"Hey, Denny, is George coming tonight?" I ask him.
He walks over and shakes his head. "No. He said he's got a ton of homework to do. But if you ask me, he would have left it for another night if he didn't want to avoid seeing a certain someone here."
"Oh. Thanks Denny." I say. I spin around and pour myself a cup of punch so Denny can't see the frown hanging over my eyes. My hate towards William Darcy never ceases to build. He has just single-handedly ruined my night. With my cup in my hand I turn around going to take a sip. I'm met by the sight of the devil himself. He wears a black suit over a grey button up shirt.
I don't have to look at his face to know it's Will. I can tell from the way he stands so tall. It makes him overpower the room and everyone in it. Without even speaking to him, I go to walk around him, but I'm stopped.
He takes the cup of punch from my hand just before it hits my lips. I throw my arms out as if to ask 'what the hell?' whilst my face shows my distaste at his action.
"The punch is spiked." He states, pouring my cup back into the open bowl of red liquid.
"How do you know I wasn't the one to spike it?" I ask, reaching and grabbing another cup from the table.
"Because I just watched you come in and walk over here." He replies nonchalantly, taking the ladle out of the punch bowl to stop me from getting it and pouring myself another glass. I don't hesitate to submerge my cup in the bowl to fill it. At this point I don't even want to drink any, I'm just trying to spite him out of anger. When I go to put the cup to my lips he takes it away once again.
"Look, it's for your own good." He says whilst pouring it away.
I shake my head, deciding he isn't worth the argument with. I turn on my heel and walk away. He may have ruined one part of my night, but I won't let him ruin the rest. Sure, I know George isn't here so my night won't be as good as I expected, but I'm determined to have a good time now -that'll show Will.
"!" I say when I see her. She turns around and smiles at me. I walk over and find her talking to Beth and Nick. The couple chat away to themselves, leaving me to fill Charlotte in on the George and Will thing. I haven't had a chance to tell her yet.
Eventually, I hear Beth say my name.
"What?" I ask her, looking up and seeing Colin standing beside her.
