Chapter 1: Dragged AwayI'm starring out the window, rolled down. Watching the desert scenery pass me by. The cool wind blowing through my tossed up brown hair. This would feel a whole lot different if my mom wasn't dragging me away for the whole summer.
With the music blasting through my headphones, I could easily block out the mindless chatter that filled mom's mini-van. My sister went on and on how they kicked Astro off X-Factor and mom, like always, listening. Well, "listening" for a parent is nodding, smiling and saying "Uh-huh" in that Kindergarten teacher voice.
"Layla!" May shouted, pulling on my headphones. I looked up, clearly irratated.
"You yelled?" I exclaimed. May hung over her seat, bouncing up and down, bobbing her little head, causing her little brown curls to bounce. And ya. She's twelve.
"Do you like french fries?" She asked, grinning, showcasing her over-bite. 'What a question' I thought to myself.
"Why do you ask?" I asked, tugging on my sleve, waiting for my cell to chime. At perfect time my phone rang. Kassidy, my best friend. Already missed me. The thought of not being with her, for the entire Summer, made me a little upset. It was the first summer ever that we wouldn't spend every waking moment with eachother. The screen of my phone glowed, signifying that I had a missed text.
Txt: I already miss you! Send me a Postcard! Love u! - Kassidy
I flipped my phone closed. Even though sometimes, I act as her security blanket, I missed her sweet nature. I replied to her with a smileyface and an 'I promise' I was about 250 miles away from her, but it felt like more. I mean, I was all the way on the other side of Washington. Eastern Washington.
Mom turned my way and sighed.
"Layla, we are only gonna be here for a month and three days. You will enjoy it!" She grinned. I guess my mom was right. I easily made friends and the ones I had back home said I was hilarious. Maybe I just needed a change of perspective. My moms car suddenly stopped in a driveway. Mom sighed.
"We are here. Oh ya. Layla, sweety, You aren't going to share a room with your sister." She leaned over and un-buckled May. She pouted and I sighed in relief. I'm pretty sure I did'nt know what I had in store for me for the next month. I stepped out of the car and yanked the phones off my neck.
"Get your bags. Then you can go to the store and pick up a few things for me. The little corner store is about a block away from this place. You can get whatever you want but ... Don't forget milk, bread and paper plates." Mom smiled. I nodded in agreement and grabbed my bags from the trunk.
As I wondered into my new home, my dog just stood there, clearly confused.
"D.O.G." I said, tossing his toy tomato into the dusty living room. He raced, trying to catch it. Ever since I was little, I have always had a soft spot for dogs.
I approached the guestroom and flicked on the light. It had been three hours since my blue eyes had seen the solid ground. Long car rides were such a drag...
I set my bags on the bed and set my phone on the nightstand and scurried back out of the room and into the kitchen. My mom stood in front of the frige, pulling her list from her mom-jean pockets.
"Be back by 5:30. Its gonna get dark fast." I patted her back.
"Don't worry!" I cooed, shutting the front door behind me.
I probably had no idea what was in store for me.
