As Blaze Boy flew below me to attack the Werewolf, I couldn't keep negative thoughts from clouding my head. I wanted to fight my own battle for once, without him barging in and saving te day. I wanted a chance to fight someone, one-to-one. Sighing, I swooped down and fired a jet of water at the werewolf's face, sending it flying backwards. Blaze Boy looked at me.
"So, what's up?" He asked, as the werewolf began charging back at us.
"Nothing." I muttered in reply, leaving Blaze Boy's side to charge at the werewolf. As we were about to hit, I fired water with my hands, using the energy of my annoyance at Blaze Boy as a power source. The wolf flew backwards and landed with a nasty-sounding crack on the street. It didn't get up.
"Nice shot. Let's get Ice Woman now." Blaze Boy instructed, landing next to me. I turned to him.
"No. I want to fight her alone. Let me do this alone." I said, glaring at the boy from behind my mask.
"What? Are you crazy? You'll never defeat her alone!" He cried, smirking at me.
"Let me try! Leave me alone!" I yelled in response, a mixture of anger and sadness swelling up inside me.
"You're weak compared to her! You're nothing!" My eyes opened wide at his words. I had heard them before.
As I jumped off the school bus, a few boys hopped off after me. They were snickering and laughing between themselves, but I wasn't paying attention, I was too busy thinking about Star Wars.
"Hey, loser!" One of them shouted from behind me. My naive, 11-year-old self thought they were yelling at someone else. I kept walking down the street, and turned down an alleyway as a shortcut to get home.
"We were talking to you, Cascade Brown!"
I stopped in my tracks and swiveled around. The boys were older than me, and bigger than me. They were all in my swimming team. They surrounded me quickly, as I looked up at their ringleader, Jonas Franko.
"Y-Yes?" I stammered, unsure of what they wanted.
"You think you're better than us, don't ya?" Jonas bellowed, glaring down at me.
"No."
"Yeah you do. You're always beating me in swimming heats. You think you're the best at swimming, but you're not." He grunted, leaning towards me.
"I-I don't think that." I replied, looking up at him. He smirked at my words.
"Well, we're gonna teach you a lesson. Don't beat us in swimming heats anymore, okay?" He said, looking around at his friends. From behind me, one of them pushed me into Jonas. As I turned around to see who it was, I felt a strong fist smack my left cheekbone, before I fell to the floor and blacked out. The last thing I remember is Jonas' voice laughing and leering at me.
"You're nothing compared to us! Nothing!"
Snapping out of my flashback, I glared at Blaze Boy.
"Go away." I snapped, before taking off and assessing the situation at hand. I didn't bother looking back as I gained altitude and looked down at the mess Ice Woman was creating. Luckily, most of the civilians had managed to escape by now, but she had held hostage a group of woman and their children, in a ice wall. The children were crying out as Ice Woman continued to freeze nearby people and crack the glass on the windows of the apartments she was standing near. I figured the best place to attack from would be behind, so I flipped myself over and surged towards her back, bracing myself for impact. I held my hands out infront of me, and in the last second, fired jets of water at her back. She flew forwards and landed on her face as I swooped towards the civilians trapped behind the ice walls. I began firing water at the ice, and it began melting, but not as quickly as I had hoped.
"You think you're going to defeat me?!" Ice Woman yelled from behind me. I looked around to find her levitating in an attacking stance. Without warning, she fired two razor-sharp icicles at me, and I cried out in surprise, flying out of the way to dodge them. "You're just a kid!"
In my state of anger and pain, I glanced back at the helpless faces of the children and woman trapped in the ice wall, before turning back to an enraged Ice Woman.
"Yeah, I'm just a kid. But I'm a kid with some freaking cool powers!" I shouted, before taking off and firing at Ice Woman. She cried out as I continued firing down at her from above. Ice Woman tried to fight back, but her ice powers were defenceless against the onslaught of water I was aiming at her from above. I screamed in pain as energy was drained from me, and I landed on the street with a thump. Ouch. That was going to hurt in the morning.
I felt drained. It was a weird new feeling. I presumed that I had just used too much power at once, but when I sat back up, I realised there was another problem as well. There was a huge cut on my left thigh, which had also cut my suit. Super. Blood was gushing out of it quickly, turning the suit material from blue to deep red. I was losing blood fast. Groaning, I tried to stand up, but I couldn't find the energy. Weak and worried, I slumped back down to the concrete. Ice Woman was a few meters away, trying to recollect herself as well. The innocent civilians were still trapped behind the ice wall, wailing and crying. My vision began to blur, and my head lolled back onto the street.
Just as my eyelids began to fall, I noticed the bright red of burning flames.
