Snowflake woke up.
Her, James, Cocoa, Bird and Glow had all spent the night next to Stars's body. Poor James cried himself to sleep.
But now only Snowflake and James were by Stars's body.
"James," Snowflake whispered, nudging him.
James's head rose and he blinked sleepily. "What happened..?"
"Stars," Snowflake meowed.
James's eyes turned sad. "Right.."
James wasn't the only one who was grieving. Night, Crow and Hop, Stars's siblings, were also very sad. But Snowflake felt the most sympathy for James.
"James," River gently meowed, padding to them. "Do you want to help bury Stars?"
James shook his head. "I.. I can't see her like this anymore."
River nodded. "Understandable. If she were here, i'm sure she'd be telling you to get that blood out of your fur."
James blinked and nodded. "Thank you, River."
River smiled. "Anytime."
Sand and Carrot came running over. "River! River!" Sand meowed.
River turned around. "What is it?"
"Why isn't Stars waking up?" Carrot mewled.
James sighed.
River's tail flicked. "You know what happened to your father, right?"
"Yeah, he died," Sand replied.
"Stars died, too," River finished.
Carrot's green eyes grew wide. "That's terrible! Is James sad?"
"Very," River responded.
Sand pawed at James's nose. "It's alright! River told me about Echo. Now Stars gets to see him!"
James smiled.
"Yeah!" Carrot squeaked. "And they'll watch over you every moment, just like Tim watches over us! Right, River?"
River nodded. "RIght."
James purred. "Thank you two."
"Any time!" Sand cheered. "Now, you're a rabbit, and we'll get you!"
James pretended to look horrified and he rolled over onto his back.
"Get the rabbit!" Carrot yowled, pummeling James's belly with soft paws.
"Oh no! I'm a helpless little rabbit! Please don't eat me!" James said, laughing.
Sand pawed at James's neck. "Boom!"
"Ooooh, you got meeee!" James shot up into a sitting position, holding his own neck with a paw, then flopped back on the ground again.
Snowflake couldn't help but laugh.
"What can Snowflake be?" Carrot squealed.
"She's a mean old bear!" Sand replied, pouncing on Snowflake.
"Grr, i'm a mean old bear!" Snowflake playfully hissed.
"Oh no, kittens!" River shouted. "Save me from the bear!"
"Grrrr!"
Carrot leaped at Snowflake, clinging onto her fur with tiny claws. James could hardly catch his breath while laughing.
And for a moment, everything seemed okay.
For a moment, everything else was forgotten.
