Chapter 4

I wake up with fresh and dried blood coating my arm.

I never bandaged my bullet wound, and I'll bleed out for sure if I don't do something soon. I tear off some of the bottom of my jacket and tightly wrap it around my arm. That should work for now.

I can still hear the infected below from my good ear. My right ear's hearing is coming back slowly but surely. I fell asleep asleep at some point, and I judge it to be around two in the afternoon from the positon of the sun. I quickly wake the others up. "We have five hours of daylight. We need to head out, now," I inform them. I walk to the edge of the roof and look straight ahead at the woods. There's a tree ahead of us with a branch extending to be about five feet away from the edge of the roof where I stand.  It looks sturdy enough, and it's pretty thick and wide. (A/N That's what she said.) No problem. I back up to get a running start, then sprint straight forward and leap. (A/N A LEAAAAP OF FAAAAAITH! References!) The brief moment in which I'm standing on absolutely nothing is terrifying. Several infected crowd the little yard of our ex-camp, reaching up to pull me down.

I land safely on the branch.

Ellie jumps over next, landing like she's done this hundreds of times before, which she very well may have. I redirect her to a different branch, which she climbs up to, and she waits impatiently.

Ella's eyes are wide and she looks more terrified than ever. I can tell she doesn't think she'll make it. "C'mon," I whisper.

She swallows nervously and takes a running start like I did, and goes for it.

She's about five inches short of the branch.

She screams as I grab her hands before she falls. She's just out of the reach of the infected, who are now riled up in hopes of a meal.

Not today.

I pull her up with both arms, ignoring the pain in the left. Once up, she hugs me tightly. A little too tightly. I can't breathe. I awkwardly pat her back, and she lets me go. I take a deep breath to get air back in my lungs.

"Ow," I say once being released.

"Sorry," she smiles slightly, "near-death experiences kinda make you need to hold on to something so you can regain your balance and not fall. Off a tree.. Again."

I laugh. "True."

"Oh, and thanks for saving my life...... again," she says, with a larger smile.

"Any time," I reply. "And I'll probably end up doing it again."

"Again?" she asks.

"Again." I nod in agreement.
