When I wake up again, the lights are off. I hear a distressed voice next to my ear. "Kira, if you're gonna wake up, now would be the time to do it."
And a male voice. "C'mon baby, please wake up." He sounds broken, like he's about to burst into tears. My eyes flicker open, searching for the source of the voices. "She's awake!" The first voice says, quietly but happily.
"But she doesn't remember us?" The male asks.
The first voice sighs. "No."
I sit up. "Finnick," I say, searching for his face. I find him and he smiles, coming to the hospital bedside. "Hey, Red." He takes my hand with one of his, and places his other hand on the side of my face. He leans in and kisses me. I smile into it.
"Oh get a room." A younger teenage voice says from next to me. Finnick pulls away, and I turn to look at who said that. My eyebrows knit together in confusion. I feel like I should know them. They roll their eyes.
"Ellie. Ellie Williams. Your stepsister."
"I don't remember having a sister.."
"You don't remember anything. Except Finnick, apparently." She crosses her arms, clearly jealous.
"Cut her some slack." A third voice cuts in. I look at them, and they smile at me. "Primrose Everdeen. Your actual sister."
"Prim." I smile.
"That's right." She smiles. "And the quiet one over there is Katniss, your older sister."
"Why's she so quiet?" I ask.
"Oh, she's just regretting everything at the moment. She's the one who accidentally shot you, which is why you're here." Prim calls out quietly to Katniss. "Kat! She's awake!"
Katniss lifts her head from where it was buried in her arms. "Really?" She looks at me, and I freeze. Those were the eyes of the person who nearly killed me.
"Kira, relax," Prim says, "she didn't intentionally hurt you."
I take her word for it, but I keep my guard up just in case.
"Hey," Katniss walks over and kneels on the opposite side of the hospital bed from Finnick. "How ya feeling?"
I don't say a word.
"Why don't you give her some time to remember?" Ellie says, sounding a bit defensive.
"There's not much of a chance she will remember anything, Ellie," Prim says.
"Well she remembered him." She gestures to Finnick, a look of disgust on her face. My eyes narrow as I look over at her.
"Guys, if I may interrupt your sibling drama, we kinda need to get outta here before we get eaten." I look up at Finnick, alarmed.
"'Parently she doesn't remember that it's the end of the world either." Ellie mutters. Finnick shoots her a look.
"Can you walk?" He asks. I shrug, and sit up. I attempt to stand, but my knees give out and I fall back to the bed. "Guess that's a no. Mind if I carry you?" I shake my head. "Good. Up ya go." He picks me up, bridal style. I cling to his neck.
"I got her backpack and stuff." Ellie says, picking up a huge black backpack, and struggling to get it over her shoulder.
"No ya don't." Katniss takes the backpack with ease, and slings it over her shoulder. "You can get her bow and stuff though." Ellie nods, shooting Katniss an angry look behind her back. I giggle.
"What?" Katniss asks, hearing my laughter.
"Oh, nothing." I reply, containing the rest of my laughter at the faces Ellie was making.
"Ready?" Finnick asks. Everyone nods. "Here we go." He pushes open the door, trying not to smack me into it, and walks out into the hallway without making a sound. I hear growling. It sounds.. Human.
"What is-" I start. Ellie holds a finger to her mouth, indicating 'be quiet'. I nod and shut up. I watch as Katniss takes a knife from her boot and stabs someone in the back of the head.
"What the hell?! You just killed someone!" I yell, distrusting her even more. Some other demented looking people heard me and are coming this way.
"Kira! You just fucking doomed us." Ellie whispers harshly.
"So you're perfectly okay with her fucking murdering someone?!" I match her angry whisper.
"Kira, look at those things," She gestures to someone with their intestines hanging out the front of their body with flies buzzing around them. "Do they look human to you?"
"They're just sick! You didn't even give them a chance!"
"No, Kira, they're dead. And yet they're alive. They aren't human anymore." And with that she runs up to one and stabs it through the eye with a butterfly knife. I watch angrily.
"Where is your humanity?!" I ask Ellie when she returns.
"Oh, Kira, don't you see? All of us- not just this group, but people everywhere. We're too far gone."
