*Wednesday 9 days later*

Ethan's POV
Ever since last week, I've been hanging out with Will and the rest of the team. We have practice three days a week, and a game every Saturday.

Once again it was my task to find a lunch table, so I went to Vanessa. She was the only one who ever had an empty table and it was also a way for me to talk to her, which I've found I like doing.

"Hi." I said as I sat down.

"Hey." She smiled.

"What are you working on?" I pointed to the work she had in front of her.

"Math for 6th period."

"Oh shit, we had homework?" She laughed and nodded. Then, four cheerleaders came and sat around me.

"Hey Ethan." They all said with fake smiles as they twirled their hair and batted their eyelashes.

"Hey guys." I wanted to tell them all to leave, but I can't. They smiled at me, and glared at Vanessa. Vanessa looked really uncomfortable. She began to gather her math in a stack and put stuff back in her bag when Will and the team walked up behind her.

"Time to go." Will shoved her off the end of the bench and she barely caught herself from hitting the floor. Right as she was about to grab her math, Matthew the linebacker dumped his milk on it.

"Oops." He said in a high pitched sweet voice. "Didn't see it there." He smirked and lifted it up by the corner as milk dripped off of it. Vanessa just stood there and let them do this to her.

"What is this anyway?" Will asked, hitting the wet papers on to the ground.

"Homework." She muttered.

All the cheerleaders giggled and the others jock smirked. She bent down and gathered her papers, then left without saying anything else or taking her bag.

"What the hell?" I looked at Will and Matthew. Why would they treat her like that?

"What's the problem, Ethan?" Will looked at me like he was ready to start a fight.

"I'm gonna bring her bag to her." I said firmly. I walked out of the cafeteria and across the courtyard in the direction I thought I saw Vanessa go. I saw her on a bench off to the side that was kind of hidden. She was sitting there organizing her papers.

"Hey, I uh, I brought you your bag." I handed it to her and smiled.

"Thank you Ethan." She continued to try and shake her papers.

"Well this is useless." She chuckled and threw away her milk covered math.

"Ya, I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

"I don't know... cause I'm associated with them I guess." I shrugged.

"Well, you don't have to worry about me anymore, I'm just gonna sit out here from now on."

"Why?"

"Why? Because I don't want to have to deal with my brother and the jocks." She sighed and forced a smile.

"Why does he treat you like that?" I asked. She didn't respond for a second and looked away.

"I guess he's just better than me, he gets away with it... I don't know." She scrunched her face when she was confused, it's cute. The lunch bell rang.

"I'll see you in sixth period." I told her as I walked away.

"Bye."

Vanessa's POV
Class, take out your homework." The teacher said with no emotion. I could hear the shuffling of papers around me, but thanks to Matthew I couldn't take my homework out.

"Mrs. Gonzalez, no homework?" The teacher pestered.

"I'm sorry."

"Well where is it?"

"It's.... I.... I didn't do it." I just told her that to simplify the situation. I've never really not turned something in.

"Don't let it happen again Ms. Gonzalez." The teacher waved her finger at me and turned back to the whiteboard.

"Hey, you good?" Ethan whispered.

"NO TALKING" the teacher said without turning around. Ethan sat back in his seat but didn't stop looking at me.

*****

After class I did the usual. I met Jenny at my locker, packed up my stuff, and walked out to the parking lot only to find that my car was gone. I sighed, but I wanted to scream.

"Hey! Hey!" I turned around to see Ethan jogging towards me.

"Where are you going?" He caught up to me, but I didn't stop walking, so he walked with me.

"Home."

"Did Will take the car again?" He asked. I sighed and nodded.

"I can give you a ride... if you want." He offered sweetly.

"It's okay, I'm fine."

"Then let me walk with you." He insisted.

"Ethan? Why are you so nice to me?"I asked and stopped walking.

"I guess... I just feel bad for you." He shrugged with his hands in his pockets.

"Feel bad for me? Why?"

"Cause you're bullied by your brother and his crew."

"You're in his crew."

"Ya, but I'm not like that. I don't ever want to hurt anyone." His hazel brown eyes twinkled as they looked deep into mine. I could feel a blush and a smile growing on my face.

"How do I know I can trust you?" I crossed my arms and he chuckled.

"How can I prove it to you?" He asked.

Just then a horn honked and my brother pulled the car up onto the curb.

"Yo Vanessa! Back off! You don't have a chance!" Matthew teased and all the other boys laughed.

"Ethan is she following you? Just shove her and she'll leave!" My brother shouted over the radio. Ethan slightly rolled his eyes.

"We'll talk later." Ethan said quietly, then got in the car, and they sped off.
