Kat woke up to the sun shinning brightly through her window while the birds chirped happily outside, it appeared to be a beautiful day outside with a clear bright blue sky. Surprisingly, she hadn't had any nightmares though she had to admit her dreams were a little strange. Usually, her dreams consisted of terrifying images that mostly revolved around her father, but last night had been different because a new face had appeared; it was the face of the mysterious handsome boy in the cafeteria. She could vividly remembered how he looked in the dream. She shook her head as if trying to shake his face out of her mind. Kat stood then dragged her feet lazily across the carpet towards her closet where she pulled out jeans and another t-shirt (big surprise) She jumped into her jeans and put on a graphic tee which had the superman symbol on it and was also her favorite shirt.

Superman had always been her favorite hero. She used to watch the movie with her dad...Another thing that had changed when her mother left. She tugged a hair brush through her tangled hair before letting it fall around her shoulders. Today she felt brave enough to glance at herself in the mirror before she left for another day of school and she didn't feel completely revolted by the reflection staring back at her, she wondered what the girl in the mirror would look like if she had a loving father and a mother who had stayed. Would that girl be better? Smarter? Sweeter and kinder? Would she be strong and beautiful? She would probably smile more and maybe scars wouldn't be engraved in her skin, but Kat would never meet this girl she dreamed she could be so why thing about such impossible things?

She sighed softly to herself as she slipped silently out the front door and began walking to school, she hummed a soft tune to herself while she walked trying not to think about summer break which was quickly approaching. Most teenagers were praying for summer to come quicker, but Kat was praying school could stay in session a little longer. School was her only escape from everything that happened at home, she wished school would continue throughout the year as insane as that may sound. Upon entering school, she lowered her head and slowed her pace moving towards her locker where Sara was waiting to greet her like always and as usual school went well...Until lunch. Kat didn't expect anything when she entered the cafeteria. In fact, she had almost forgotten the boy that had approached her yesterday, but as she walked over to her regular corner she suddenly froze.

Her eyes fell on the same boy who was sitting in the exact spot he had sat next to her yesterday. She chewed on her lower lip and looked away pretending like she hadn't seen him before swiftly walking over to another corner where she hoped she could eat alone. Surely enough, the boy caught her eye and soon followed her. He sat beside her as if it was the most natural thing in the world and he had done it everyday of his life. Mentally, she was banging her head against the wall, but physically she could do nothing but sit there silently.

"Hey." He said in a gentle tone.

She didn't respond.

He sighed, "Talking is a two way street ya know."

She didn't say anything.

The boy watched her for a moment before grabbing his lunch tray and placing it in his lap. Kat snuck a glance at him though not very secretively because he caught her looking at him. This made Kat blush hard and she looked away. Though out of the corner of her eye she could have sworn she saw him smile. "I'm Jake. Jake Revelle." He offered trying to make conversation again. She looked down at her shoes and tried to make herself seem uninterested though she was actually listening intently.

"I've seen you sitting here all alone before." He continued as he took a bite out of his apple.

She gave a small nod.

"Well, I thought a girl as pretty as you shouldn't be sitting alone and hiding her face."

Anger flared inside Kat. How could he say that? Some would have taken it as a compliment, but not Kat. This boy was trying to flatter her because he wanted something from her. She looked up and shot him a glare, "What do you want?" She asked. He blinked looking slightly astonished, "I want to know you." He answered simply. Kat shook her head and looked down letting her hair fall in front of her face so it would create a wall between them.

He didn't say anything for a moment and Kat thought he was going to leave before he said, "I want to know you." He repeated. That's when she knew he wasn't leaving and he didn't seem to plan to as he ate more of his lunch. Why couldn't he just leave her alone? Kat didn't want people to know her! Because to know her would mean you'd have to know her history and that was something she never wanted anyone to know. People would pity her or stay away from her or treat her differently. Kat didn't want that. She just wanted a friend. Someone who could know all of her and still love her. Was that too much to ask? Surely this boy wouldn't understand and once he heard her story she knew he would leave. So, Kat kept silent.

Little did she know that this boy would change her life...Forever.
