The drive was rather quiet which made Kat squirm and shift in her seat uncomfortably at the silence between them. Occasionally she would sneak a glance at Jake wondering if he was angry with her though she was nearly positive it wasn't that. What could she have done to upset him? She couldn't think of anything so she kept quiet and distracted her thoughts by looking out the window seeing places she had never been. A new question popped into her head, where were they going? She didn't know the answer to that either.
Her lips parted in a soft sigh breaking the silence temporarily and making her stiffen as if the sound could have been wrong of her to make, but the quiet ride continued and so she continued to stare out the window seeing houses pass. Soon they were passing cars on the highway and then shops as well as cute little cafes where people were sitting outside sipping cups of coffee. When thirty minutes had passed and not a word had been spoken nor was Jake seeming to slow down at all, Kat finally asked her question aloud. "Where are we going? " she looked over at him and bit her lower lip hoping he didn't mind her asking, but she relaxed as a smile tugged at the corner of Jake's mouth. "Curious aren't we? Well, we're almost there."
Kat nodded and looked outside to see a nearly empty parking lot then just ahead an amusement park and it was the biggest she's seen, but also the only one she had ever seen except for on television. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped a little as she took in the sight. In all her years of living in such a small town, she never knew they had something like this. Jake parked close to the front and looked over at her laughing a little as he saw her state of awe, "Thats what I mean! You don't get out much and you'll learn more here then you will at school." This made Kat scrunch her nose and arch an eyebrow at him wondering what he could mean by saying rollercoasters could teach her more than textbooks. That just didn't seem right.
He must have noticed how unsure she was about the statement he had made because he then explained, "You're a smart girl Kat and school is fine, but there's something you've never learned and never will in school." She looked at him tilting her head slightly to the side and Jake smirked, "Its how to have fun. Now come on!" He jumped out of the car running towards the entrance. Kat laughed getting out of the car before chasing after him as they both raced towards the archway that was the entrance to the park. Jake beat her easily and looked back as she slowed down reaching him breathless, "You win." She smiled. The man standing there under the arch gave them a bored expression and waved them carelessly on into the park which was practically empty since it was a school day. At first, Kat was nervous the man would send them back knowing they should be at school, but he didn't seem to care. Jake took her hand making her flinch slightly at first, but then she inhaled deeply through her nose calming herself as she remembered that this boy wouldn't hurt her...Would he? She hoped not.
Since Kat had never been to an amusement park she wanted to ride all of the rides even if some looked scary or extreme. She wanted to remember moments like this. Moments like when she went to the mall, stood up through the sun roof in the car, and this moment as well. All the moments she wanted to remember were moments she had shared with Jake. Did this mean something? It couldn't right? Her eyes flickered down to their hands which were palm to palm as he took the lead pulling her towards the first rollercoaster which had a huge loop. Kat was more concerned about what was happening to her or what could happen to her rather than the loop on the ride. She could fall in love. That scared her more than anything. Love never interested Kat. Never! If love was a mother leaving her child and a father becoming abusive then she didn't want anything to do with love. If love was a father molesting his own daughter then she didn't want it.
Love had only presented itself to Kat through her parents and on television, neither of these interpretations seemed real or worth it. She politely pulled her hand away from Jake's as she followed him to the seats. The seats were built for their feet to dangle off making her feel slightly nauseous, but she wasn't backing down now. They were the only people on the ride and they were in the very front row. Kat wondered how long it would have taken them to get on the coaster if there was an actual line there.
The ride began with a small jerk then took them to a peek before dropping many feet at a high speed. She felt a lurch in the pit of her stomach and a scream built up in the back of her throat which she let out before laughing wildly as they were taken upside down. Kat rode that one rollercoaster five times before Jake managed to pull her along to another then another and another. When lunch time rolled around they sat down on a bench with the hotdogs they had just bought. "Won't we get in trouble for missing school?" Kat asked as she took a bite of her hot dog, she looked over at Jake to see him shake his head. "Nah. They'll assume we're sick." He took a bite of his and moaned happily before eating some more.
Kat laughed a little. That boy could eat with a large and constant appetite, no doubt about it. "What about your parents? Will they be angry if they find out?" This made Jake smirk, "But they won't find out." He crumbled his trash and stood taking position before shooting it into the trash can. Kat clapped as he made the shot and he turned towards her taking a bow.
By three o clock, they had ridden every ride at least twice and were in the car heading home. It was the most fun Kat had ever had, but she was wiped out. She rested her head on the window closing her eyes and before she knew it she woke up to Jake carrying her inside his house. She blinked looking around dazed, "Wha-what?" Jake looked down seeing her awake and hushed her softly, "Sleep. I got you."Kat didn't need to hear anything else, she smiled groggily and nodded closing her eyes as she drifted off once again.
The sound of a clatter woke Kat up with a jerk, she looked to the door instinctively where she always looked in her old house when she was afraid her dad was about to come in, but she didn't have to worry about it anymore. she was safe. She wasn't sure how long she slept and looked around a bit confused, but then saw Jake sacked out in the corner of her room sitting in a round big black chair. That's when a voice called from downstairs, "Jake! Time for dinner!" Jake was awake and on his feet in seconds making Kat wonder how he didn't stumble from dizziness as he walked over to her, "Hey." He whispered with a small smile seeing she was awake, "Hey." Kat whispered back and sat up slowly."My mom has dinner made. You hungry?" He asked raking his fingers through his hair. Her stomach answered with a growl before Kat could get a word out. Jake laughed extending a hand to help her up which she gladly took as swung her legs over the side of the bed before standing. Together they walked hand in hand down the stairs, "Hey mom!" He said swinging their arms a bit as he smiled at his parents, "Would it be cool if Kat and I went to the school football game?" His parents looked at both of them then their eyes fell on their hands holding onto one another before they exchanged looks, "Sure." His dad said after a moment.
Jake smiled and waved to them goodbye before leading Kat outside. Kat stumbled a bit still feeling a bit groggy from just waking up. "What about food?" She asked as her stomach growled again. He glanced over at her, "We'll eat at the game." He must have noticed the confused expression on Kat's face because he restated what he had said, "There's food at the football game." Kat arched an eyebrow, "Why would they have food at a football game?" Jake shook his head amused, "You don't get out much do you?" She blushed and shook her head climbing into the passenger seat.
