~~~Kat smiled slightly at Jake setting the frame back on the hook before walking out with him. She caught him look at the picture before closing the door behind him. Kat must've looked nervous because he took her hand giving it a gentle squeeze, "Hey, they'll love you." He whispered watching her with a small smile. Kat nodded though she felt unsure. Parents never liked her much because of her own parents. Everyone knew how they divorced and how Kat's smile was rare since the day it happened. Nobody wanted to talk to her or even knew how to. Kat was still surprised that even Jake started talking to her. She looked over at him wanting to ask him what made her so easy to approach because no one had ever done that before....Why was he so different?
As they reached the bottom of the stairs hand in hand his mom and dad came into view. Kat felt her breath hitch as she saw his parents waiting in the kitchen, but she managed a small smile and tried to stand straight being to look confident. The first impression is what stuck with a person forever and she wanted to be remembered to this family as Jake saw her or at least how she hoped he saw her. She wanted to be seen as confident and polite...She didn't want to be that sad girl whose mother left her as a child. Hopefully, this could be the start of something new. Jake's mother stepped forward and extended a hand, "Its so nice to finally meet you. Jake has been telling us about you." Her smile was inviting and she seemed like one of those perfect mother's who was the one that did the dishes, held the sick child's hand, and was a great hostess for parties. The second thing Kat noticed about Jake's mom was her dress which was a beautiful dark blue and reached her knees. It was simple, but in no doubt expensive. She pursed her lips glancing down at her own outfit of ripped jeans and a grey sweatshirt. She suddenly felt even more self conscious. Kat shook her hand and blinked when she finally took in her actual words rather than her appearance. Jake had talked about her...which made her brighten a little though she decided not to press on that detail.
"You can call me Shannon and this is my husband Scott." She gestured to a tall man cooking at the stove. When he turned to face Kat, it was like seeing an older version of Jake. Kat gave him a small nod, "Nice to meet you." She used her manners. "So you're the mystery girl from school." His dad winked at her and went back to cooking. Kat arched an eyebrow looking over at Jake who had now turned a shade of pink."Alright." He gave a light uneasy laugh glancing her way before looking at his parents. Kat bit her lower lip as a smiled tugged at the corners of her mouth when she saw him get flustered. Mrs. Shannon turned to Mr. Scott, "Honey, is dinner almost ready?" He nodded, "Seconds away." He looked at his wife and kissed her cheek. She smiled turning back to Kat, "Join us for dinner. We have a lot to discuss."
A lot to discuss were words that made Kat's stomach twist into a tighter knot than it already was. She smiled sitting at the table beside Jake as Mr. Scott started serving out the food.Halfway through dinner was when the dreaded questions started being asked.
Questions like,
What about your family?
Where do you live?
Your parents are divorced?
Who do you live with now?
How come Jake wants you to stay here?
Finally, dinner was concluded with his parents giving approval to her which made Kat's heart skip a beat of joy. "Th-thank you!" She smiled looking at them in disbelief and feeling truly grateful. Mrs. Shannon's arms opened in a welcoming invitation. Kat went gladly into her arms and hugged her almost as if it was her own mother. No one would ever replace her mom, but she had missed a mother figure and if Mrs. Shannon could be that figure for her then she would be more than happy. Everyone says time flies when you're having fun and that was so true. The rest of the night was a blur, but a blur she could never forget. They ate dinner, the best dinner she had ate in a long time. Kat was able to talk about her day to people who actually wanted to listen. She could laugh and smile without forcing anything. It all came natural and felt natural. By the time she was getting ready for bed, Kat felt as if she had known these people for a long time. She sighed smiling as she started to change into her new pajamas that she had bought with Jake earlier that day in the mall. Snuggling between the covers in a new room, new clothes and new bed was all so strange yet comforting.
Soon, Kat was fast asleep, but all too soon was she jerked up in her bed after little rest gasping. A wave of heat hit her hard and she threw the covers off quickly before collapsing back on the bed trying to cool off. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she couldn't quite catch her breath. She wasn't sure how she felt suddenly so sick and fearful. she had gone to bed feeling fine...The covers being throw off didn't take away the heavy weight on her chest that seemed to be preventing her from breathing well. She jerked up again and practically ripped off her shirt before sliding off her pants. For a moment, she lied there in nothing but her undergarments until she realized she recognized this feeling....A panic attack.
