1347 AD

Decima picked up a shovel, and looked down at the dirt. She tried not to look to her left. Her mother, Pompona, was crying into her hand. Her other hand held her wand shakily.

"Mama," Decima grabbed her mother's other hand. "It's ok Mama." She didn't know what else to say. The Plague had swept through them, killing mostly everyone, it was Dragonpox to the Wizarding community, just the unspeakable Plague to the Muggles.

Then she made the mistake of looking to her left. At least three hundred bodies lay there, the horrible effects of the Plague still upon them. The stench of death was in the air. Cries of agony shot through the air as people died and loved ones mourned. She then vomited all over the ground.

She knew her brother Seol was among them. She had known for a while before the plague even hit. So had her sisters, Nona and Morta. They had a unique gift. They were triplets, a rarity enough, and each of them had a different form of sight.

Nona, her oldest sister, could see birth. She was a petite blonde with a strength to her brown eyes. People said she was the most pure, and she was kind to most of the village. She could predict when each person in the village was to be born.

Decima was the middle child. She was a brunette with burning amber eyes. They had so much intensity, most people feared her. Off every person, from the moment they were born, to the moment they died, she saw a string. A white wispy string of varying lengths. She was known as the seer.

Morta was the youngest, and the most feared. She could see death. Her eyes were lifeless, a side effect of seeing too much death. She could see the strings also, but she never touched them. She had found out when she was younger that that resulted in immediate death. Death happened either way, but it just made it sooner the longer she touched them.

It was their father that she had found this out with.

Decima was comforted by Nona, who walked up behind her.

"Deci, it's ok, don't look...don't." She patted her sister's back. Nona was technically the oldest, and was betrothed to the baker. Or at least she had been, but he now lay among the dead. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she was shaking.

"Where's Morty? How come she didn't see this coming? Seul is dead because of this!" Decima broke down. Morta had heard the last sentence and scowled.

"I did foresee it, but alas I could not change it. Why dwell on death when it's going to happen either way?"

Then, as the Muggles finished the mass grave, the bodies were poured in. Decima struggled against her sister, reaching for her brother as he tumbled into the pit, never to be seen again.

Decima howled to the heavens, grief suddenly spilling out of her. "I just want to die! I can't take this, why do I see when every man dies? I don't want this, I never did!"

Her mother just shook, crying more. That night, over a meager dinner, she wanted to join prayer, but she simply believe in anything anymore. There was too much suffering for anything good to exist in the world.

That night, a darkness engulfed her. She tossed and turned, then heard a voice, a deep thoughtful masculine voice.

"You said you wanted death?"

"What?"

"You said this, did you not?"

"Y-yes..."

"Do you want life? Do you want the suffering and grief and hope and pain?"

"No. There is nothing but sorrow in life."

"So be it."

She fell, flailing in the darkness, screaming. Faintly she felt herself being shaken, then life left her lungs.

"You have doomed them all. It was your choice, live or die." The voice boomed. "I will give you your full powers, and you will defy me, death. But in return, you shall serve me, and your sisters, and the only way to free yourself is to free the star, the stag, the wolf and the rat. The Fire and the chosen. The greatest war the world has ever seen will be fought, and lost if you do not do this correctly! You must sacrifice some to save all. Much suffering will be alleviated should this happen. It is done. "

"But why those things? What do you mean?! You make no sense, this is improbable. Why just those things, if I serve you for all of eternity?"

"Fate will be unkind, if you do not wish to be, then do this. I give you two chances. Use them at will." It ignored her plea.

She felt her mouth open, and dust forced itself in. She now decided when someone died, and how long their life was, and she faintly heard her sisters choking as well. Now Nona decided when someone was born. Now Morta decided how one died. When it was all over, the dust settled inside her and she growled, an inhuman voice exiting her.

"We are the Fates."

&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&-&

It was a book so old it was nearly fell apart as she lifted it. She had recognized the name Decima, but from where?

She read the story, and shivered. Poor Decima. In the story, it was not known what happened to the girls, they simply disappeared one night and no one ever found them again. No one who went looking ever came back, either.

"Merlin." She muttered. Why was Sirius asking about this? How could he even have known? He was barely an adult!

Minerva McGonagall could not let go of what this meant. How could this girl even be alive, it had been four hundred years since she was last seen! And she didn't know how she had known the name either. It seemed shrouded in secrets, all of it. And she was determined to find out how.

And meanwhile, watching her from afar, was a poor woman lost in the spirit of the Fate. She was a prisoner, and the only way to free herself was to use her second chances. She had used one on a boy who was bitten by a werewolf, and the other was unfairly killed.

And she wasn't sure if she had used them correctly. If she hadn't, she'd be doomed to this existence forever. And the young girl in her swooned over Mr Black, and she blushed on the inside, her outer facade lifeless as the fate she represented. She saw his string of life getting longer every day, but the stag and the fire's still were short. How would she manage this now?

A/N I really don't like how this chapter turned out, so I'm going to rewrite it. I'll keep this one up until it's ready. I just think my origin story was confusing and uninteresting.
