Chapter Six- Yukon

The fact I thought Michael was completely crazy was beyond my comprehension at this point.  For the last two days Michael has been driving, and stopping, driving and stopping.  We stop for sleep, and stop for this so called gas that keeps the automobile moving.

We found what Michael calls a ‘road,’ to drive along, with a ‘map,’ to the Yukon.  We are heading to the Capital, to see if there is still a communication, and whether or not they are with the ‘treaty,’ or against it.

“Can you close that Michael, I am cold,” I asked nicely.

“I cannot believe you want me to shut the window, it is so hot outside Amanda.”

“I am not use to the wind blowing against my skin, at such a rapid speed.”

“Amanda, you are something else,” Michael laughed.

“I do not find it funny that I am cold Michael, now can you please put the window up,” I moaned.

“Yes…yes… right away your majesty.”

“Fine than, your window open, see if I care,” I groaned.

“Amanda, I am your friend, I have no problem putting it up for you,” Michael smiled.

“Well then stop making me feel so guilty for asking you,” I shouted.

“Keep it down Amanda, it’s just the two of us in here,” Michael said.

“When do I get a turn to drive Michael?”

“Never,” he laughed.

“Why not,” I asked politely.

“Because I found the automobile, so therefore I get to drive it,” Michael said.

“Well fine, when I find my own automobile, I am not going to let you drive it.”

“Perfect, so the two of us will be even,” Michael replied.

“It’s not about getting even Michael,” I replied.

“Amanda look,” Michael directed to the left of him.

“What?”

“The Yukon,” he said happily.

“Yes, that is amazing, now do you think we could stop and catch something to eat?” I asked.

“We can stop when I need to gas up, but right now, I want to keep moving,” Michael advised.

Again!  We always do what Michael wants.  What a selfish friend.

“I know you are not very happy with me right now Amanda, but remember I am trying to protect you.

“I do not need to be protected Michael, I don’t know how many times I need to stress this to you.”

“Well as my friend, I will always do what is in your best interest.”

“Whatever,” I groaned.

“Michael it’s getting away,” I shouted as the rabbit ran out from under the box trap Michael lay down forty or so minutes earlier.

“Well of course the rabbit is going to get away Amanda.  In fact anything I try to catch will get away, because you keep getting up, and shouting.  Could you please just sit down, and be patient?” Michael asked.

“I am being patient Michael.  I think I was more than patient when I told you to stop one hour prior to you doing so, because I did not think there would be another place for miles for us to gas up.  And now look at us both, we are stuck here, automobile-less,” I snapped.

“Amanda, would you relax, as long as we travel close to the roadway, and the woods, we are sure to see a sign pointing us to another village, and there we can surely find access to another working automobile.”

“Michael, finding the one we had was just luck.”

“Amanda, my community has working automobiles; it is not un-common to find them.”

“What!”

“That is right, it is not the first time I have drove one.  I just told you it was because I did not want to chance you driving.”

I was appalled.  What a liar.

“Michael you are not a very nice friend right now,” I pouted.

“Well like it or not, deep down you know I am right.  Now keep quiet, I am hungry.”

“I was hungry three hours ago,” I shouted out loud.

Suddenly from in the trees along the road-way, there were two shadows hiding amongst the trees.

“Michael, look over there,” I pointed.

“What?”

“There is someone else here,” I said mumbling.

“Amanda relax, it was probably just an animal.  And if you do not keep quiet how am I going to catch it?” Michael asked.

“You will not catch me,” a strange voice said, and then a man peered out from behind Michael, holding an object pointing it at Michael.

The man stood taller than Michael, and built much firmer than him as well.  I knew by looking at him, that he was surely older than Michael and I both, but not by much.  He had darker shaded eyes, with long darker shaded hair, but his skin was lightly shaded grey.  His mouth was very attractive, and so was his facial structure, he was very strong looking.  His pants ripped, and his shirt ripped as well.  I thought maybe he was a hunter?

“What is your business here?” The man asked.

“We are in search of someone dear to us,” Michael replied lying.  I wondered if the man was stupid enough to see through his lie.

“And this is your mate?” The man asked.

“Yes,” Michael replied.

The man locked eyes on me, and I could not look at him, because the sight of him was intimidating.   He kept the object pointing at Michael.

“I must ask that you leave here at once, you will draw much unwanted attention to my community near-by,”

“Yes, we would be glad to be on our way, we are just looking to catch something to eat.  Please my mate and I have not eaten in days,” Michael lied again.

“I am sorry I cannot allow the two of you to hunt here.  If the communication becomes aware of your travelling here, then we are all doomed.”

“As I said, as soon as the two of us have caught something to eat, we will be on our way,” Michael said sternly.

The man looked at me again, and then looked back at Michael.

“Wait, how old are you?” The man asked.

“Eighteen,” Michael replied.

“And your mate, how old is she?”

“I am twenty,” I replied, and then I saw Michael begin to panic.

“She is not your mate, you lie,” the man accused, and then pointed the object at me directly.

“Please, calm down,” I replied and started walking towards the man, and then a loud noise went off.
