"Gaagghh." I groaned as someone turned me on my back. Not that, that hurts, but when you're asleep it's very disorienting. I opened my eyes to see a precious red head. I smiled the best I could with a lizard mouth. "Good morning Mai!" the precious boy chirped happily. "Good morning Gare bear!" I cooed as I stretched out hearing several pops. His cheeks were immediately dusted with a rose colored red, "Maiii, I don't like that nickname." He whined out. I giggled as I climbed off the toddler bed and onto Gaara's shoulder. Over the years Gaara had grown into a adorable little boy. He was soo cute!! Even if he didn't grow eyebrows, he was absolutely charming. He had a chubby round face and the most beautiful seafoam green eyes ever. Me, being from a different world, I had never seen eyes like that. But according to A.L it was normal to have eye's of a different color like that. And what I also didn't understand was that his eye's were pupiless. But they are beautiful nonetheless. "Uncle gave me some ryo so that we could go eat breakfast!!" He cheered as he grabbed a teddy that I had gotten him on his first birthday. "Oh? And where did Yashamaru go?" I asked, hiding my disdain for the man. "He said he had a mission. And Temari and Kankuro already left to the academy. So It's just you and me!!" He cheered while tripping over his night gown. I jumped as he fell and I landed on the floor next to his head. This boy was a mess in the mornings. "Well let's get you ready for the day before we do anything." I giggled as I did the hand sign for the transformation jutsu. I found myself using this jutsu more often than I wanted. I didn't like using this jutsu because of what had happened a couple of years ago. But one night I had had a conversation with Gaara.
{Flashback 4 year old Gaara}
"Mai, are you really a lizard?" Gaara had asked out of nowhere as we sat and ate our Oyakodon. I had stopped eating with a piece of meat hanging out the side of my mouth. I quickly ate that piece and licked my lips with my tongue. "Well for right now yes. I'm stuck as a Gila monster. Why do you ask?" I said licking my eye out of lizard instinct. "How,- how long will it take for you to find a way to be you permanently?" He asked not meeting my eyes. "Sweetie is everything okay? Why do you ask all of the sudden?" I asked him. "It's just that- Well the- It- It's nothing. We can wait until dad finds a way." He said quietly. "Hun, this isn't nothing. There has to be something. What's wrong Gare-bear?" I asked crawling to him. He blushed at the mention of my nickname for him. "It's jus-mm muhmmm" He trailed off towards the end as he looked down at his bowl. "I don't understand mumbles and grumbles sweetie. Speak a little clearer." I said looking at him. "It's just that the oth-rmm muh ummm" He trailed off yet again. "Gaara, sweetie. Please speak clearly so I can hear you." I said a bit more sternly. He looked at me a bit surprised at me tone. I had only used a stern voice when absolutely necessary, and sometimes when I was talking with Rasa. He looked to the side as his face turned from a scarlet color to a soft rose as his blush softened. "The other children are mean when they talk about us. But they're more meaner when they talk about you. They tease me because they say your not a real human. But dad says that you are. That's why I asked. The other kids are mean to me." He finally said. He looked down and pulled his legs up to his chest. His body shuddered and I heard him hiccup as I watched tears slide down his face. I quickly made my way to the floor and performed the transformation jutsu. I wrapped my arms around him and sat on the table, our food long forgotten. "Sweetie, those other kids don't matter. Are you happy that I'm here?" I questioned as I pulled him into my lap while I crossed my legs to sit Indian style. "Yes. *hic* I love that you're here to spend time with me." He responded quietly. "And you don't mind that I have to stay in a lizard body for now, right?" I asked. I brushed his hair from his forehead because he was sweating slightly. "R-*hic* right." He quietly said as he curled up more. "Does it bother you that they make fun of me?" I cooed quietly, rubbing his back in circular patterns. "Yes, it does." he said hugging his knees. "Well sweetie, people are always going to talk. It's a part of human nature, it's an ugly part but it's a part of being human. People are always going to judge others because no one in this world is the same. As long as people have differences there will always be such a thing as harsh words. This world has turned on it's self. We as people have turned on each other. It's sad but true. That's why I want you to always stay humble and kind. You have no idea of what other people have to deal with. Sometimes a humble word or kind gesture can work miracles. If you can make one person feel happy then it will be more likely that they will do what I like to call, 'Paying it forward'. Which is a fancy and easier way of saying that kind acts go far." I explained while holding the boy that had finally started calming down. "How would someone 'Pay it foward' though?" He asked me while I noticed he missed saying the first 'r' in forward. Cute. "Well, when one person is happy, and they make another person happy, then that person will most likely go on to make someone else happy. And then that other person will do the same and it will go on and on." I stated and smiled at him. "Sometimes you don't even have to do anything. Sometimes a smile is enough." I told him. "As for when those kids want to mean next time I want you to try to ignore it. If they want to be mean then you don't need to be around them. They will learn soon enough that it's wrong. Mean people are not worth your time, Okay?" I asked him. "Okay." he said happier than before.
{Flashback over}
I hadn't thought that me being a lizard would affect him to much. But apparently I was wrong. So the day after that happened I went to Rasa to check on how this whole research was going along. He wasn't to happy when I walked in under the transformation, but it was the only way I could get up the stairs. Gaara was with Yashamaru at Chiyo's for his check up and the other two had gone to school. Rasa had said that he hadn't found much yet so I reluctantly went to his research corps and asked myself to confirm what he said. I really hadn't wanted to go to the intelligence division because Fumi had pissed me off about a year ago. But I went, and it was true. So I resulted in using the transformation more often when I went out with Gaara. Also A.L had said that constantly using the jutsu would gradually raise my chakra reserves. Which I still don't know if that's a good thing or not but it's happening. Gaara snapped me from my thoughts as he dragged me to his wardrobe. I pulled out his chosen outfit of brown pants, that were too long so I had to fold and hem them at the bottoms, a grey shirt and his pale green pull over cover. I walked over and drew a bath for him. "Come on the sooner we get done here the sooner we can go out." I called to him. Soon he was in the bath and playing with a rubber ducky while I washed his hair. I rinsed his hair and left him to play for a bit in the water with his rubber ducky and rubber froggy. Being a lizard I don't really take baths often so I was pretty much clean. I placed his clothes on his bed and readied his brush. Grabbing his towel I walked back into the bathroom to see his hair covered in bubbles. He paused to look at me with the now empty bubble bath bottle in his hands. I stared at him as he stared back at me. "I DIDN'T DO IT! MAKI DID IT!!" He yelped as he pointed at his green froggy that he named Maki. I blinked and started laughing. "Well it seems Maki won't be able to take bathes with you anymore." I giggled out as he yelped a no and grabbed his frog. I washed his hair out a second time and dried him off and dressed him. Sitting in the old rocking chair that I had to fight Yashamaru for because he wanted to get rid of it, I brushed Gaara's hair. "What did you want to do today after we eat?" I asked him. "I want to go to the park!" He stated happily. "To the park we shall go!" I stated just as happy.
{Time skip}
"HAHAHA!!" Gaara laughed out as I pushed him on the swing. We had been at the park for about two or three hours because he didn't want to leave yet. If he wanted to play then dammit he's going to play all he want's. I had noticed a couple of the other parents got uneasy when Gaara moved to a new play place. Those fucking cowards. I really don't like the adults here. They're all cowardly. Hmph. "Pay more attention two leg!" A.L said. I looked around and say a anbu appear out of fucking nowhere. "The Kazekage would like to see you." They said monotonously. "What about Gaara?" I asked it. "He will have to stay here." They said. "UGHHHhhhh. Fine." I said as I walked towards Gaara. "Hey Gare-bear, I have to go do something, alright. I'll come back as soon as I can. I promise." At this moment I saw Yashamaru walk up. "Uncle!!" Gaara yelled as he ran for him. "Hey buddy!" He said with fake glee. "I thought you went on a mission." I said in a slightly venomous tone. Gaara hadn't noticed my tone as he went to chase a grasshopper. "I finished." Yashamaru answered in an equally venomous tone. He knew that I knew that he didn't truly care for Gaara. He treated him like a mission, instead of actually caring and raising him. He didn't like me because I genuinely loved and cared for the boy, and I hated him because he didn't care. It wasn't much of a secret either, anyone who saw us in the same room could easily tell we hated each other. "Come now Miss Sabaku." The anbu said. Oh and that was another thing that had happened. The Kazekage made me take his and the kids name because my last name was so fucking weird according to these people. A.L had said their name meant 'of the sand' so my name was now Mai of the sand, or Sabaku no Mai. Which in turn confused a lot of people who didn't know that the Kazekage's wife had passed almost six years ago. I walked over to the anbu and grabbed their shoulder as we flashed away in a puff of smoke. We arrived in the Kazekage's office. There was the head of the research corps and someone who I considered my best friend, Fumi, along with several others who also worked in research. "What's this about Rasa? I was doing something." I asked blandly. "We have finally figured out how to fix your body situation." He said flatly.
