"Next week," The news reporter had said, "The Alligator Festival will be happening. Last year, it was cancelled due to the rain, so hopefully this year the skies will be clear!"
"...the what?" Sans asked after that segment of the news was over with.
"The Alligator Festival." I told Sans, "It's just something the town does every year. It was cancelled last year from mass amounts of rain and the rain stopped only after it was too late."
"what happens during the festival?"
"Oh, just some alligator stuff. Exhibits that show alligators, alligator jerky, alligator tricks, people feeding alligators, alligator gift shop...You know, 'normal' alligator stuff." I tried to explain.
Our section of Ebbot city was pretty strange. First off, it was called CliqueVille Plaza for some weird reason. Second, it has an Alligator Festival. It was also where most monsters moved to since they first appeared.
The Alligator Festival was our number one tourist attraction, even if we had a lot more to offer. The residents were fairly happy here, though some monster protesters moved away due to monsters moving here so often. I was sure that once everyone saw how great monsters were that they would come back.
Most of the people I knew before were the ones who moved away. That might have been why I thought they would come back. It was because I hoped to see my friends again. They were so fun to be around. It was a shame that they didn't like monsters.
They might have liked Sans if they met him. A few of them had the same humor as him. If only they had stayed for a little longer.
"is that a fun pastime around here?" Sans asked, pulling me away from my thoughts.
"yeah, it's pretty fun. A lot of people go there, though." It was the truth. Even though the festival happened all weekend, it was crowded all day on both of the days. Though, Sunday it wasn't as bad.
"well maybe we could go together, doll. you may even meet a few people i know there. maybe I will see some of your friends, too." Sans offered.
"I would love to go with you, Sans. But, you won't be seeing any of my friends. Most of them moved away already and others don't really like anyone..."
"then i guess you will only be seeing who i know. who knows, you might not see them, though. they aren't really settled into life above ground yet."
"Right." I said, then getting a question in my mind. "Hey, Sans?" I asked.
"yeah, sweetheart?"
"How are you so accustomed to being above ground when you have only been here for not even a month?"
Sans's eyes went dark and he paused for a moment before saying to me, "that's a long story, dollface. let's just say that i have been waiting to stay above ground for so long, that i have just accepted it automatically."
That answer really didn't clear anything up for me. In fact, it only gave me more questions to ask him.
"But didn't all other monsters been waiting for this for so long? You seemed to have one of the least excited expressions, even though you have that eternal smile."
"well, i guess i was just kind of surprised. almost seemed like we would go to bed and wake up one morning to see that it was all just a dream. i kinda tried not to be so attached."
"Alright..." I said, now even more confused than when I first thought of the question. It felt like he was avoiding something. I wanted to know what, but I didn't want to be nosey or anything.
"So are we going to the festival?" I asked him, changing the subject back to how it was earlier, just to make sure of what we were doing.
"well why not?" Sans asked. "it'll be kinda like a date for us, doll." Our faces reddened at the thought of a date. The last time we had been outside in a public area together, he had to protect me from someone. I wasn't sure how this would turn out.
"relax, doll." Sans said, seeming to notice my tense expression. "nothing bad will happen, i'm sure of it."
"Yeah," I said, "Nothing bad will happen. Even if something bad does happen, you will be there for me, right?"
Sans paused for a moment before chuckling at my question. "of course i will be, sweetheart. i promise."
I blushed even more when I realized how I must have had sounded to him. That was embarrassing. I didn't mean to seem that way to him. I wasn't sure if that was a nervous laugh, an amused laugh, or a different laugh that he gave me.
Sans pulled me closer to him and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "i promise." He repeated to me, with a blush that almost matched my own.
I snuggled closer to him, thinking of what would come next in life. I was perfectly happy staying here with Sans forever.
