Every step he was forced to take, Link tried to concentrate on the sunlight peaking through the branches as Christy held his head forcefully back. It was the only thing distracting him from the pain in his neck, but as they got further away from Rhett's house, the trees became more dense and almost all of the light was blocked out. He couldn't see where they were going very well, but Link was pretty sure they were entering the woods that - when not in the hospital - he used to visit with Rhett, and sometimes Christy.
The tape keeping his mouth shut had already fallen off earlier in the journey, so Link was able to speak, but with difficulty.
"C-Christy, it really hurts," he said, now struggling to swallow from the harsh angle Christy kept him in. To his surprise, Christy let go of his head, but made a tighter grip on his arms so he couldn't run away. Link's head fell forwards and he coughed, sending relief through his throat. Christy sighed at his slow speed, and tugged him further along into the greenery.***
It wasn't long until Christy and Link finally arrived at where she had planned to take him the night before, and it was so deep inside the woods there was nobody else nearby. Behind some tall, overgrown bushes and vines was hidden an almost sheltered glade, surrounded in great oaks and small passages through the gaps. Old concrete slabs and bricks were scattered on the ground of different colours, yet as Christy pulled Link through the shielding bushes and peered around, not much had changed since she last visited.
When the two were first staring to date, they'd always go to the same place in the woods to walk around, and chat about all that was happening in their lives. Link was hard at work with Rhett building up their joint business, and Christy was taking a teaching course at the local college. She tended to rant on about her classes to Link, who would sit and listen to her every time. After eventually dropping the course, having the huge fallout with Link, meeting Scott, and taking on her new 'career' built upon levels of lies, Christy just felt it was right to take Link back there, where it really all begun.
With a hard push, Christy released Link from her hold and he collapsed straight onto the ground, rubbing his sensitive wrists and panting heavily from the tough walk. No part of him was ready to up and leave in a sneaky sprint, so he kept to the floor and squeezed his eyes closed, hoping and hoping somehow Rhett knew where he'd be, and come rescue him like from the hospital. Knowing it was silly, Link imagined Rhett turning up in shining armour on a silky black horse, scooping him up and taking him far away just like in the fairytale books. From the persistent cold wind, and looming presence of Christy above him, Link couldn't distract himself for long, and he was back in the woodlands, accepting there wouldn't be any knights coming to save him this time.
Link was about to attempt standing up on his shaky legs, ready to turn and face Christy properly. However, he instantly froze as he felt two arms secure around him, and someone lay on his back so there was no way he could get up. It wasn't tight or intimidating like he expected, instead it was warm, and careful. Link's eyes reopened and long blonde curls fell into his field of vision. It was Christy, and seconds later, he felt hot tears drop onto his exposed neck as she started to cry above him.
