I was now about five blocks from my house and already had six missed messages on my phone. There were also four voicemails all from my mom. I stopped at a stop sign and the place around me was deserted and so I sat there and put my head on the steering wheel and started to cry. I then picked up my phone and pressed call.
"Hey" I said wiping my eyes.
"Hey," the voice replied.
"Can we talk? I really need someone right now..." I responded.
"Sure. Where?" The voice asked.
"Can we meet at Daisy's Diner?"
"Sure, I'll be right there."
We hung up and I drove to Daisy's. The parking lot was empty except for a few of the workers cars. I waited in my car for a few minutes until I saw the persons car drive up and the driver got out and went into the diner. I then got out and went to the booth where he was.
"Hey Miller," I said.
"Hey." he spoke very faintly. "Why do we need to talk?"
"It's about my dad."
"What about him?" he asked.
I explained to him everything that happened and everything between my mom and I. I noticed that it started to rain and I stopped talking and just looked out the window.
"Can I help you?"
I jumped. It was our waitress.
"Um, I'll have a chocolate milkshake."
"Make that two," Miller responded. He smiled out of the corner if his mouth. "We always get the same thing at this diner."
"Yeah," I said smiling down at my napkin. "I remember." I was glad we were finally talking.
"Now," he responded. "That's really bad what they did." he wasn't smiling anymore.
"Yeah! I know." I hesitated. "If it's not much to ask...can I maybe stay at your place tonight?" I looked up.
He sort of froze in his place. "Sure, it's not a problem."
I let go of my breath and responded, "Thanks. I really need a friend like you. Please don't tell Devon though. He might get mad at me."
"No worries," he responded putting up his hands in a surrendering motion.
The waitress came back with our milkshakes and Miller bought us some fries and we talked for about an hour and when we finished our fries and milkshakes we paid, got up, and left. I drove to his house and I haven't been there in about five months. It felt cozy when I got inside and then I saw his mom.
"Grace?" She seemed so sincere.
"Hi, Mrs.Goose," I responded.
"Grace..." She said while giving me a hug. "I haven't seen you in months. Why is that?"
I looked at Miller and I didn't know how to explain everything because it was all my fault.
"Just have been...busy, I guess."
"Well that's a shame...isn't it." She looked so delighted to have me over. "And you know that you should call me Kate."
I almost forgot that she didn't like being called Mrs.Goose because she didn't like being called an animal.
"Right, sorry about that."
"Is it alright if Grace stays the night?" Miller asked.
"Well of course it is." She gave me one last hug and left.
