I got into my car and drove off. I went to the diner and sat in the booth that Miller and I always sat in. Some rain clouds pulled in and it started to drizzle. The waitress came by and I ordered myself a shake. She came back and handed me the drink and left. There was an older couple a few booths down and a teenage couple at the counter. They looked at me and whispered to each other. They looked familiar from school but I didn't know their names. I ignored them and looked out the window.
I stared at my shake for a few minutes and kept looking down. The bell rang as someone came in, but I didn't care. I heard their footsteps squish as they walked and stop at my table. When I looked up it was Devon.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," I responded. It's been a few months since we talked.
"May I?" he asked pointing to the opposite side of the table. I nodded and looked at him as he sat down. "I heard," he said.
"About what?" I asked.
He looked down and took off his baseball hat. "The loss."
I swallowed my pain and twirled the straw of my shake. "Um." Thats all I could say.
"Grace I'm sorry."
I nodded and kept staring at the straw. "How'd you hear?"
"Miller texted Scott and Scott texted me."
Scott was one of Millers best friends but he was also one of Devon's best friends.
"So Scott told you?"
"Yeah." he responded. A waitress came by and took his order. "Would you like anything Grace?" he asked me before the waitress left.
"No thanks." I responded looking up. The waitress nodded and walked away.
"Grace, I know you don't want to talk to me very much because of the things I've done...but I do care about you."
I looked at him and made eye contact. Right when I was about to say something my phone rang. It was my mom.
"Where did you go?"
"I'm at the diner."
"Alone?"
I hesitated. "No,"
"Then who are you with?"
I took a breath. "Devon."
"Devon! Why the hell are you with Devon!"
"It's fine mom. He showed up and we started talking. I'm fine."
She hesitated. "Okay, call me if you need anything."
"I will." And I hung up. "Where we're we?"
" I told you I cared about you."
"Right..." I remarked. "You sure Devon...because it doesn't seem like it."
"I know, I know. I've made mistakes-"
"Big mistakes." I cut him off.
"Big mistakes." he remarked. "But, I want you to know that I'm sorry and will always be here for you."
I made an odd face and looked out the window.
"Grace...do you forgive me?"
There's the question. The one question that people always ask. The person responding will most likely say yes to make sure they don't hurt the other person. I was choking it down though. I really didn't forgive him. I looked at him and then my shake.
"Um..." I responded. "I guess." I didn't choke it down all the way. He smiled and I looked out the window. It was now pouring and there was a thunderstorm going on.
