"Jared, what the hell is this?" His mother screeched. She was red with fury, and who Evan could only assume was Jared's father was standing behind her. Evan covered his mouth with one hand and turned off the music with the other.

"Mom-I-"

"You're queer? Since when? We went into your room to drop
off some food we made you, but you weren't there! I was expecting you to be over at your friend Evan's room, but obviously you two are more than friends! How could you do this to us? I thought you loved this family? But you're a queer? You disgust me."

Jared kept trying to speak, but he was interrupted over and over. His mother was shouting so loud and so fast, it was practically inaudible. Finally, she took a breath. She picked up the dropped food and stood still, her brows furrowed in anger and disgust. Mr. Kleinman just shook his head. He had a disappointed look on his face that would haunt Jared for weeks to come. "Don't bother coming home. We don't have a son anymore." He said, quietly but with just as much venom as Mrs. Kleinman. Jared's mother slammed the door behind them, leaving the two boys alone.

Jared immediately crumpled in Evan's arms. Evan could tell he was trying not to cry, but after a few minutes, he started sobbing. "I'm sorry." Evan whispered to him over and over. He couldn't imagine what Jared was going through. Neither of them had come out to their families. They just weren't ready yet. Evan was too anxious to do it, but he never knew why Jared didn't want to. Jared never seemed like he wanted to talk about it, Evan didn't want to pressure him. Evan could finally see why Jared never told him.

He had just lost his family, who he had loved for his entire life. And they loved him for all of his life, too. How could they just disown him? After all they've been through as a family? Evan wanted to cry with him, but he knew that he had to be the strong one for once.

After about an hour, Jared was so exhausted that he fell asleep, curled up with Evan. Evan kissed his forehead and slipped out from underneath him. He grabbed a blanket and laid it on him, then picked up his phone.

"Hey, Mom. Can we talk? It's important?"

When Jared woke up, Evan was gone.
