The hours pass and finally it's time for Mal to leave. Evie paces the entire loft as soon as Mal disappears from sight. She wrings her hands and bites her lip

"Evie you're making me nervous" Jay says rubbing his temple. He'd insisted on going with Mal but they'd all talked him out of it "you're making me feel even more useless"

"I just wish I could've gone with her" Evie says sitting down beside Victoria who starts patting her head

"I wish Ben hadn't been taken from right under our noses" Carlos sighs "then none of this would have happened"

"Let's not wish for the impossible okay?" Victoria sighs "Evie how are you doing with Doug?" She says in an attempt to change and maybe lighten the mood

"What?" Evie asks distracted                       

"With Doug" Victoria repeats "How are you two?" Evie knows she's doing this to take her mind off of Mal and appreciates it

"Oh we're fine" she smiles "he says that with the money we get from all the Cotilion dresses that I could buy this castle I've been looking at"

"That's wonderful Evie!" Victoria exclaims happily "I'm glad you found Doug"

"He's really nice and I know he likes me" Evie smiles "I really like him too" she turns to Carlos and raises an eyebrow at him "what about you and Jane?" she asks and Victoria squeals happily

"Yes! Tell me everything!" Victoria adds

"There's nothing to say it's just a small crush" Carlos shrugs but avoids eye contact with the girls

"Little crush?" Jay scoffs "dude you've been drooling after her ever since she had Mal change her hair last year. All you ever talk about is how soft her hair is and how pretty she looks in blue"

"Don't forget her gorgeous blue eyes that shine like sapphires" Evie adds and they all burst out laughing. Jeremy smiles at his queen's laughter, she's usually serious with all the pressure of ruling, seeing her smile makes him feel like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.

"Alright but what about you?" Carlos turns to Jay questioningly

"What about me?" Jay smirks

"You're always talking about how Lonnie is so pretty and so strong, how her mother's such a badass" Carlos accuses

"That's admiration that's not a crush" Jay argues and avoids Victoria's eye

"Lonnie has such pretty hair and she can totally kick ass" Carlos says trying to mimic Jays voice "Lonnie is so cool and smart, her eyes are so pretty and when she smiles at me I feel like melting"

"I've never said her eyes make me melt" Jay rolls his eyes but Carlos got him because he didn't deny any of the other things

"Fine I exaggerated that" Carlos smiles "but everything else is true" Jay blushes and rolls his eyes once more.

"Shut up" he growls but Carlos smiles even wider

"Have you asked her to cotillion?" Victoria asks

"I'm not going to ask anyone to cotillion" Jay sighs

"Is Lonnie going with someone else?" Evie asks

"Lonnie.... I don't even know if she's going to go and I don't plan on asking her" Jay says exasperated "just let it go"

"Jay" Victoria says kindly "you deserve to be happy. You know that right?" Jay turns to look at her and slowly smiles

"I do" he says and they conversation ends. They're all falling asleep, Victoria and Carlos are asleep, when the door whines open and shuts with a loud bang. Everyone jolts and blinks away the sleep. Carlos falls off the couch in shock and Victoria jumps making Jeremy chuckle and her scowl in return.

"What happened?" Evie asks seeing Mal's fuming face

"I lost" she growls "I was so close to getting Ben out alive but Uma... she..." she grumbles and sits down, hard, in the couch next to Carlos.

"What exactly happened?" Jay asks

"And no grumbling please" Carlos yawns

"Uma has demanded an exchange, the wand for Auradon's king" Mal says stiff "if I had won Ben would have gone free but Uma sprung the wand trade on me and I lost my focus"

"So she wants fairy godmothers wand and she'll give us Ben, safe and sound?" Victoria asks

"But we can't give her the wand" Carlos argues

"And we're not going to" Evie says slowly, all eyes turn to her "because I have a plan"
