Chapter Ten

Bella had never believed she would meet a boy she hated more than the boy who lived next door to her who used to sit at his window and watch as she walked past, but that was before she met Draco Malfoy who just loved to see how far he can push Bella until she blows. One time it got too much for her and she nearly punched him, but McGonagall walked past just in time and Bella didn't fancy getting expelled. Still, first-year Gryffindors only had Potions with the Slytherins, so she didn't have to put up with him much.  Or at least, she didn't until they spotted a notice pinned up in the Gryffindor common room which made them all groan. Flying lessons would be starting on Thursday - and Gryffindor and Slytherin would be learning together. 

"Typical," said Harry darkly. "Just what I always wanted. To make a fool of myself on a broomstick in front of Malfoy"

Bella chuckled not taking her eyes off the notice. "Great, another thing to add to my list of worries. Ever since Hagrid thought my last name was Black, it's been on my mind. Hermione can't even explain it --or if she has she hasn't told me. She's still not talking to me"

She glanced at Hermione who sat in the armchair closest to the fire and sighed...she's been wanting to talk to her and find out what was wrong but she hadn't had the chance to yet. 

"Leave her to it, it's not your fault you're actually making friends,"  said Ron before glancing at Harry. "Besides Harry, you don't know you'll make a fool of yourself"

Bella nodded agreeing with him. "I know Malfoy's always going on about how good he is at Quidditch, but I bet that's all talk"

The boy's agreed with Bella knowing she was right. Malfoy did talk about flying a lot, it was all that came out of his mouth in Potions and Bella wanted to pour the potion she was making over her head more than once because of it. He always loudly complained about first years never getting into the house Quidditch teams and told long, boastful stories which always seemed to end with him narrowly escaping Muggles in helicopters. Bella of course, laughed loudly at this and spat her pumpkin juice on Hermione -- which also might have something to do with Hermione not talking to her even if she did apologize. 

Malfoy wasn't the only one though. The way Seamus Finnigan told it, he'd spent most of his childhood zooming around the countryside on his broomstick. Even Ron would tell anyone who was listening about the time he'd almost hit a hang-glider on Charlie's old broom. 

"Wow, so you're even more clumsy on a broom then? Do you want L plates?" Bella had said when Ron told her and Harry. Ron got confused when she mentioned L plates so Bella had to explain what they were.

Everyone had been talking about their experience of flying on a broom as Thursday drew nearer and nearer, making both Bella and Harry grow annoyed by it. They thought they were the only two in the whole school who had never been on a broom but soon found out that wasn't the case. Neville had never been on a broomstick in his life because his grandmother had never let him near one. Both Bella and Harry felt she had good reason not to but didn't say anything to him. Neville managed to have an extraordinary number of accidents even with both feet on the ground. 

When Bella mentioned the flying lesson's to Hermione as she was trying to make small talk between them both, she noticed how nervous Hermione got. There's nothing in the books she could learn by heart - although she had tried - about flying. At breakfast on Thursday, she bored Bella as she went on with tips on flying she'd had gotten out of a book from the library called 'Quidditch through the ages'. Bella was happy she was talking to her more now, but she wished she would talk about something else. Neville however, was hanging onto every word, desperate for anything that might help him in the lesson.
